Introduction:

The scenario talks about sustainability business prospect and thereby create a proposal for

sustainability business approach relating to the business contract between Regency Hotel

Complex and that of the Regency Stadium, Croydon (Kricsfalusy, George and Reed 2018). The

problem that is being intended to address is banquet packaging for the stadium which cannot be

recycled. However, the background information on the same can be provided here to make the

prospect more clear. In a recent football match the major sponsor of the stadium hosted a

corporate box in the stadium and some major clients were disappointed that the banquet

packaging was not able to be recycled and that this was unacceptable to the passionate

environmentalists (Kricsfalusy, George and Reed 2018). The paper thereby focuses on the

banquet packaging system that is not environment friendly and at the same time tries to put into

forefront the proposal for ushering in a sustainable business approach. Improvements need to be

made so that the sustainability in work can be promoted (Epstein and Buhovac 2014). There is a

need to conduct an analysis on the current work process or practice and gather data about this so

that an improvement prospect can be ushered in. to dwell on this area and better this work

approach or the issue important points like resource management practices and resource usage

needs to be taken into consideration (Kricsfalusy, George and Reed 2018). Other than this an

analysis on current business prospect, current staff recommendation and suggestion prospect,

corporate sponsorship prospect and some others also needs to be analyzed so that an idea about

the present scenario as well as the issue can be received (Epstein and Buhovac 2014). However

resources would also be required in this prospect to address the issue and that includes fund,

management idea, selection of good resource for the banquet responsibility and some others. In

order to solve this problem a systematic analysis is to be done along with discussion with the
corporate sponsor and also the catering resource that is responsible for the banquet packaging

(Epstein and Buhovac 2014). As far as funding for the recycling plan is concerned, the sponsor

of the Regency Stadium being an environment friendly corporation is contributing $500,000 a

Year, out of which a budget of 20% would be allocated for the implementation of recycling

program, that will include setting up a fully functional program and will also help in reducing the

energy usage as proposed in the recent audit report. So as mentioned, to put forth the plan of

recycling program, it is also required to have a recycling strategy in place along with the proper

business plan to use the funding in a proper and economical way. My role here is that of a board

member to analyze the issues, complain and put forward the verdict or suggestion relating to the

current scenario.

Strategies:

What we are planning here is about setting up a recycling program at the Regency

Stadium, in order to reduce the wastage done by the banquet packages and other waste materials

spilled during the events at the stadium. For that we will be following up the;

1) Recycling Strategy; in order to fix up the issue of waste management.

2) Business Plan; that will be used in systematically utilizing the funds as per the requirement.

Our first priority is to set up the recycling strategy, and the plan for the same. Putting up the

recycling process in place, especially at a place like sports venue/auditorium is a tedious and

tricky task, as it needs the involvement of different segments like; Top Management, Operational

Staff, Cleaning staff and last but not the least awareness among the Spectators/visitors. In order

to put forward the recycling strategy we need to move by the following srategies;
1) Placement of trash and recycle bins at the Stadium venue strategically and pairing them

when required.

2) Maximizing the reduction of waste

3) Increase recycling process

4) Collecting and measuring the Data of dispose.

5) Educating the Staff, volunteers, Fans and Visitors.

6) Involvement of Sponsors.

7) Placing the recycled-content Purchasing in practice.

8) Going organic

9) Managing the items, that’s hard to recycle.

However a brief about the selection or the sourcing of these methods can be put forward (Epstein

and Buhovac 2014). Different websites, texts, books and journals about sustainable working

approaches have been studied in the context and based on the reading of those, the strategies

have been formed here. These strategies will help in addressing the environmental issue. The

environmental issue here is usage of improper banquet packaging and process of recycling the

waste, and this is something that does not go well with the environment or a national and reputed

stadium in Australia (Kricsfalusy, George and Reed 2018). The issue of current Banquet

Packaging is they are not recyclable or hard to recycle, most probably because of the use of

Plastic in the packaging, however there are certain recyclers available who are willing to recycle

the plastic materials as they cut them in small pieces and make them reusable for different

purposes. Recycling strategy is all about recycling the waste material in this case the food

packets into something else or into some new objects and materials and thereby will also help in
reduction of greenhouse emission (Epstein and Buhovac 2014). The strategy of recycling will

help in supporting the environmental cause as well and will also help the organization or the

management of the stadium to work with sustainable business practice approach. Recycling is

one of the options that have been proposed by a staff member and the board is yet to decide on

this (Kricsfalusy, George and Reed 2018). However this strategy or recycling goes perfectly apt

with the issue where the banquet packages would be given a new form without being mixed with

the environment and thereby prohibiting the contaminating of the surrounding, but this need

proper awareness among the users as they have to place the waste in the bin which is made

specifically for that. The other option available with us is, use of other banquet packaging system

rather than the current, following environmental law and others (Epstein and Buhovac 2014).

Like I have mentioned above the number of process included in the recycling strategy because,

the implementation of process like recycling cannot be dependent only on one method, it’s a

inclusion of number of methods and practices, if one is not working 100% then there are other

methods which are supporting the process, implementing the various process brings the

flexibility to the system and provides wide area for operations. As per the Australian

Government any business causing harm to the environment or is polluting the environment is not

legal and all the organizations need to follow a certain standard in their business approach that

does not have adverse impact on the environment (Kricsfalusy, George and Reed 2018). The

strategic processes that I have pointed out will be helpful in achieving these benchmarks since

the strategies are also focused at ushering in environmental sustainability in business.

Evaluating the Strategies:

When we need to evaluate the strategy, the one thing that is going to help us is the

evaluation of disposed material. The evaluation strategy will be used with whatever process or
strategy we are going to follow for the recycling program. As we have pointed out the 9 different

process of recycling program,

1) The first one is placement of the recycling bins. It is the most cost effective and common

method, it is used in most of the public places and even at the homes, where the

segregation of the waste is done on the basis of their type, weather it’s a reusable waste

or not. This requires minimum investment and also people are already educated about the

use of the same.

2) The second strategy is Maximizing the waste reduction, this can be a very method to

chalk out the waste material, and start using the material which is either reusable or easily

disposable, but the only problem with that it require involvement of multiple operations

team, like the base of our issue is banquet packaging, so the packaging company has to

change their complete operations accordingly and also the machinery and technology

used for packaging will be different to the current process. It is time talking and

expensive process.

3) The next thing we can consider is Maximizing the recycling, this strategy can be useful

with our core issue of the waste management of the Banquet packaging, but this need

external support of packaging vendors and help haulers who help us in managing the

waste material, also haulers can benefit from the recovery they can made from the waste

material.

Education of fans and other stake holder is necessary but it won’t be helpful without the

recycling setup in place, like the once we discussed in above points. However incorporation
of the Organic items and reusable/recyclable products can be put in place with proper

planning and budgeting.

Now as far as budgeting is concerned we have already mentioned that out of the sponsors

contribution the 20% can be used for the recycling program. The estimated budget can be

used in the process of a) Training and education of the people involved in the process, b)

Purchase of the new products, like machinery if required, separate bins as per the

configuration, this will juice out the maximum segment of the budget with approximately 40-

45% will go into the product and item purchase, c) Strategic placement and installation of the

items purchased so they can be used maximum of their capabilities without impacting the day

to day operations, once the locations are finalized the installation will be easy and will not

incur much of the cost it won’t affect the budget by more than10% of the total. d) However

communication and marketing is the other aspect which will be required, it will act as the

part of the training program as it will let the people know about the process stadium is

following to make it clean and more environment friendly, and marketing is always on the

higher side of the budget like as purchasing of the product and will need the 30-35% out of

the total recycling budget.

On the basis of the above discussion, what I will be prosing is the use of the new trash and

recycle bins, this is the most cost effective, easy to implement and operationally effective

process. Though it also required some learning and training, and the strategic placement of

bins to implement the Zero waste criteria, but operationally and thinking about the long term

prospect it is the best process. However it can also help the management and visitors to get

some earning from the trash as there are companies who sponsor their trash bins and make

them in the form of kiosk so that user can throw the waste in them and in turn the user get
paid some amount, it is very innovative and effective process which help in promoting the

waste management at the public places like stadiums and subways.

Information gathering from Stakeholders:

Stakeholders of the stadium can be defined in two categories on the basis of Stadium and internal

operations;

1) Who have maximum interest and low involvement (Management).

2) Maximum involvement in event and low interest in operations (Customer).

Our primary task here is the information gathering from the later, there are number of ways the

information can be gathered from the customers, about the changes are proposed at the stadium;

1) Making the group of local volunteers who will share the details with the customers and

take their feedback about the changes being proposed and how it is going to make the

stadium better place.

2) Scheduling the camps at local colleges and school, and making them educate about the

waste management and recycling process, and how this is going to help for the long term

future of the stadium. Kids can also easily influence the other members of their

surrounding and society.

3) Distributing the leaflets and also screening about the recycling programs on the big

screen in the city, this will attract the attention of lot of customers.

These are few of the methods which can be used for information gathering and also can be most

effective in terms of time and cost.

However for the former, meetings with all the management staff and people involved in

operation can be scheduled to take their input and understanding their take on how to make the

program successful and more effective

Setting Targets:

For setting up the targets we will be using the S.M.A.R.T. goal setting process, that will

help us to bifurcate the targets in small segment which are easy to follow-up and achieved in a

planned way.

As we will be putting a plan for the Recycling process we have to be specific, about which plan

and strategy we are following, here we are going with the placement of Trash and Recycling

bins, we have to be very particular about the installation of the same, in a way that they can be

used to their maximum. We should know what we are recycling and how it is going to recycle, a

proper blueprint is being made about the program. While implementing the plan, the proper

knowledge and study of the waste management and recycling has to be done, so that we can

achieve the Zero waste target of ours, it includes the how the recycling process is done and how

much operational effort it required, the complete process should not affect the event and day to

day activity of the arena. If the impact of the activity is not measured then it will result in the

failure with waste of money and resources.

We have all known about, how effective the bin system is and if bins are properly marked and

customers are properly educated about the system, then it very successful, we also have the

option of changing the banquet packaging, but with that also waste management system needed

to be placed and it is not 100% reliable, so with proper education and learning of the bin
management the bin system of waste management is the most reliable system and it can be

implemented within the quickest of time, completing the demand of the sponsors and

shareholders of the stadium.

Implementation Plan:

As we have already mentioned above that implementing the banquet packaging module from the

current form to the recyclable one, requires the proper waste management and placement of bins

is the core of that process, only by replacing the packaging won’t help the recycling process.

Stadium is the place, where events are happening very often be it a football match or any local

addressing or cultural event, a stadium can not rest so is the stadium management and staff. So

the proposed implementation plan has to schedule with in the gap of two events, because if an

even is cancelled because of the proposed changes, then it will be the loss to the sponsors and

shareholders.

So if a football tournament is not happening in the stadium then, the time frame between the two

events can be extended without cancelling, so the proposal will be made accordingly keeping the

time frame of two months for properly placing the system. As the maximum waste, be it

recyclable or not, is done by food items sold at the stadium, so the implementation of the bin will

be carried out by the Regency Hotel Complex.

To implement the bin installation process, new bin has to be purchased as per the requirement,

like Red for normal waste, Green for recyclable waste and brown for food waste, paper and other

composite items. With that we also be needing the support of the external guys who can help in

placement and installation of the bins are required and proposed to the management.
For this recycling program, we are going to involve the staff members, stadium volunteers and

also the local supporters, this way they can also understand about the changes happening at their

stadium and will help in spreading the news about the new recycling system in place at the

stadium.

Promoting the Strategies:

As we have seen at the recent football match, the banquet packaging has create a lot of waste and

this is all because of the unavailability of the proper recycling program in place. The sponsors

are not happy with this, that has prompted us to make a recycling program and with that we also

needed to promote the same to the stakeholders. As mentioned above only changing the

packaging will not help, so we are working on the core issue of putting up the trash bins which

are environment friendly. With that we also need to make customer aware of the changes, as in

the implementation plan we have involved the Management staff, volunteers and local proactive

customers, so that they can be made aware of the changes happening in the stadium and can also

help to educate other people in their vicinity.

There are other process which we are going to follow for promoting the strategy, like a print add

in local newspaper describing what changes has happened at the stadium, again we will follow

the process of distributing the leaflet as it is very effective and common practice of promotion.

Also with the help of volunteers setup the small camps so that more and more people can be

made aware of the changes at the stadium and how these changes are good for their own hygiene

and cleanliness. These process are the most effective and visible once for promoting a program.
Monitoring the plan’s progress:

This can be done by frequent supervision of the implemented strategies its outcome and

also any kind of feedback for the clients, the sponsors and the management (Thorlakson, Zegher,

and Lambin 2018). The tool we are suing for monitoring the performance is “Management by

Objective” (MBO). “Management by Objectives” was first used by Peter Drucker in 1954,( J.

William Pfeiffer., John E. Jones, 1998) this helps in setting up the specific objectives and targets,

as in our recycling program implementation we have set small objectives with the help of

SMART. MOB is a perfect fit for these kind of situation. It will help us monitor those small

targets which we have placed, like delivery of items, colors selected for the product, how the

recyclable material will be transferred from source to destination, are the labeling is as per the

requirement. Also one pilot can be done in the presence of board members, with the help of

management, volunteers and staff members of the stadium and Regency Hotel, that will help us

to show how effectively the system works and the input will be taken by the board if they require

any change in the process implemented.

Reporting on the plan’s progress

The person who are most interested and excited about the changes at the stadium are

either Customers or the board members, and they needed to be informed about the progress of

the recycling progress. In both the cases the mode of information sharing will be different, whilst

in the case of board members a small meeting and formal email can work, where they will be

made aware of the changes happened and how they are working. On the other hand in case of the

customer, the reporting of the plan’s progress is tricky, here again we will follow the same
method which we have used above for promotion and information gathering, however we will

leave the leaflet this time as it is not a promotion. A group of volunteers is being made which put

up the camps as per the predefined locations and make people aware of the changes happened at

the stadium and how they have to use the system, when they will visit the stadium next. The

word of mouth information is the most effective way of making people understand about the new

things that is happening around.

However for the students small camps has been placed at the schools and colleges, explaining

how and what changes has been made at the stadium, and also making them understand about the

use and need of the recycling program.

Evaluation Plan:

For evaluation plan we have focused on three action points as per the process

requirement.

1) Understanding of the Objective

2) Question related to the objective

3) Time line achieved or not.

The program objective is very clear to us, that we have to implement the recycling program at

the Regency stadium, the same is being required after the scene during a local football match,

where littering is all over the place. We have decided to put in place the recycling program which

can help to recycle the banquet packaging and also implement the zero waste policy at the

stadium. So whatever waste material is collected sent to recyclers with the help of haulers. For
that we have decided to educate the stakeholders about the new program and also made a pilot

which helps us to understand the feasibility of the success of the changes applied at the stadium.

As far as the current situation is concerned, the recycling program implementation is the success,

however the critical test will come in the actual scenario, for that volunteers and stadium staff

has to be properly trained to take care of the process during the event and should make customer

aware about where to throw the waste and how the waste will be recycled for our own good.

Based on the success of the recycling program, a local water management program will be

placed, which will help to recycle and reuse the water for different purposes, as the stadium

always requires lot of water supply for drainage and field, recycled water can be used for the

same.
