Legal Issues

Using other peoples images or words/article is a legal issue because it goes against the laws of
copyrighting. To ensure that I don’t breach this i will be making sure I take all of my own photos
and write up my own article, making sure to take into consideration what I am writing about. For
the permission of the photos seeing as taking photographs of minors can be seen as a criminal
offence. I will ensure that I have my mums consent to take photos of my little sister and make
sure that i take appropriate photographs, making sure they are suitable.

Ethical Issues

Over editing and airbrushing and image is an ethical issue because changing a lot of features
on someone and making them look a lot different to how they usually look might make people
either feel uncomfortable or get upset by the difference. To ensure that I don’t breach this I will
only be changing the colouring and brightness etc so I won’t be altering any of my models
features and change how she looks. Using hyperbolic wording is an ethical issue because I
could make the clothing seem a lot better than it actually is, a magazine would have to be aware
of this.

Regulatory Body of print media

Who are IPSO?

The IPSO or the Independent Press Standards Organisation is the regulator for the magazine and
newspaper industry in the UK. They are accountable for making sure that magazines and
newspapers follow a certain code.

What do they do?

They ensure that magazines and newspapers follow the Editor’s Code, if any magazine or
newspaper gets complaints, they investigate that publication and can make them publish corrections
or adjudications if they have breached the code (including the front page). They also monitor the
press standards while also require nember newspapers and magazines to submit an annual
statement about how they’ve been following the Editor’s Code and also handle the complaints. If
when they investigate a serious standards failing publication, they can fine the publishers up to £1
million in some very serious cases. They also provide editors and journalists with advice about
keeping to the code and they also provide them with training so they can uphold their standards to
the highest they can be.

What is the editors code of practice?

The Editor’s Code of Practise sets out rules that ISPO regulated newspapers and magazines
have agreed to follow. The code is made up of 17 different rules.
Which section applies to your work?
6. Children -

i) All pupils should be free to complete their time at school without unnecessary intrusion.

ii) They must not be approached or photographed at school without permission of the school
authorities.

iii) Children under 16 must not be interviewed or photographed on issues involving their own or
another child’s welfare unless a custodial parent or similarly responsible adult consents.

iv) Children under 16 must not be paid for material involving their welfare, nor parents or guardians
for material about their children or wards, unless it is clearly in the child's interest.

v) Editors must not use the fame, notoriety or position of a parent or guardian as sole justification for
publishing details of a child's private life.

These are the sub codes of the main children’s code in the Editor’s Code and although that they
do to legitimately apply to my work as it is a fashion magazine where I have used children as a
model I will still keep this in consideration due to the fact that I would have to have full
permission to photograph the model..
