Scope

This course aims to provide the training for candidates to launch and take charge of a
survival craft and rescue boat other than fast rescue boats, in accordance with Section
A-VI/2 paragraphs 1 to 6 of the 1978 STCW Code as amended.

Objective

This syllabus covers the requirements of the 1978 STCW Code as amended, Section A-
VI/2 and Table A-VI/2-1.
 Take charge of the survival craft or rescue boat during and after launch.
 Operate a survival craft engine.
 Manage survivors and survival craft after abandoning ship.
 Use locating devices, including communication and signaling apparatus and
pyrotechnics.
 Apply first aids to survivors.

Entry Standards

All trainees of Renaissance Training Center must be able to meet the requirements of
Regulation I/9 of the 1978 STCW Convention, as amended:
 Be not less than 16 years of age;
 Provide satisfactory proof of his/her identity; and
 Meet the applicable medical fitness standards established by the party.
Medical certificate must be issued by DOH and MARINA accredited Medical Clinic.

The trainees must also have completed the Basic Training and instruction in accordance
with Section VI/1-1, VI/1-2, VI/1-3, & VI/1-4 1978 STCW Code as amended.

Course Certificate

On successful completion of the course and demonstration of competence, a certificate


may be issued by Renaissance Training Center certifying that the holder has met the
standard of competence specified in Table A-VI/2-1 of the 1978 STCW Code as
amended.

Course Intake Limitations

During lecture the maximum number of trainee is 24 per classroom.

There will be 8 trainees per group, 1 instructor and 1 assessor in every practicum
exercises. It should not exceed the capacity of the survival craft/ life raft to be used
during practical demonstration.

Staff Requirements

The Instructor/Assessor/Supervisor shall have appropriate training in instructional


technique and training methods (STWC Code A-I/6, pa 7). The instructor and supervisor
must be a holder of certificate of instructor’s course (IMO Model Course 6.09) and for
Assessors, he must be a holder of certificate of Assessor’s course (IMO MC 3.12), they
must be knowledgeable with the course program, qualified in the task for which training
is being conducted. The Instructor/Assessor/Supervisor must possess a valid
accreditation certificate to teach/assess/supervise the course as per MARINA STCW
Circular 2014-04.

Training Facilities and Equipment

Ordinary 42 square meters classroom and an LCD/LED TV with Desktop Computer or


SMART TV are required for the lectures.

The RTC practicum site has an access to a river and coastal area of Cavite that could be
used for certain wet drills.

The following equipment are present during the training:


Sufficient lifejacket for all trainees, instructors, rescue boat crews, immersion
suits, and thermal protective aids.
1 glass-reinforced plastic lifeboat, approximately 8 meters in length, fitted with an
inboard diesel engine and a full set of oars (new or replacement boats should
preferably be fire protected lifeboats complying with Section 6.1 of the LSA Code)
with a set of gravity davits to hoist the lifeboat, sited so as to allow launching into
the water.
1 Glass reinforced plastic rescue boat with outboard engine and a full set of oars.
1 20-man inflatable in containers, one which can be placed in a float-free stowage
with hydrostatic release unit.
1 Davit launched inflatable liferaft with launching davit.
2 Portable 2-way radiotelephones
1 Demonstration set of survival craft pyrotechnics.
1 Emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB)
1 Search and rescue transponder (SART)
1 Helicopter rescue sling.
1 Complete set of lifeboat equipment.
1 Complete set of liferaft equipment.
1 Life-size dummy for resuscitation training.
1 Neil-Robertson stretcher for use in exercises.
Safety/first aid equipment comprising:
 MOB boat
 Powerful searchlight¹
 Retro-reflective tapes¹
 First-aid
 Stretcher
 Resuscitation kit with oxygen/suction unit
