When you grow up somewhere, some-
times the place can lose its charm, and for
me, Huntington Beach — also nicknamed
Surf City, USA — was that way for a long
time.
Growing up, I often felt out of place in
Downtown HB, where all the cool kids,
surfers and skaters hung out in their bikinis
and Billabong shorts, while I could be spot-
ted in my layers and wearing Converse All-
Stars even in the sand. For a long time I
avoided it, but going back with my best
friend has helped me see a lot of the charm
and appeal it has to offer now that I’m a lit-
tle bit older and wiser. I’ve also learned to
not care so much about “fitting in” to what-

country.
Using recently released data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, we
looked at the most and least expensive places to live in the US.
America's big coastal cities are really expensive.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis recently released data on personal in-
come and the cost of living in 2016 for metropolitan areas and the non-
metropolitan parts of states. One of the main indicators the BEA released
shows the relative cost of living in different parts of the country.
Regional price parity is an index that sets the national average cost of
goods and services at 100, with a particular region's RPP showing how the
cost of living in that region compares with that average.
For example, the New York City metropolitan area had a 2016 RPP of
122.0, which means NYC and its suburbs are about 22% more expensive
than the national average. Meanwhile, Beckley, West Virginia, had an RPP
of 78.8, meaning that goods and services cost just about four-fifths as much
as the national average.
Here's a map illustrating the RPP of the country's metropolitan areas and
of the parts of states that fall outside those areas. Regions in blue are less
expensive than the national average, with darker blue regions indicating the

According to the AKC, the Doberman who is well trained and socialized “is a
loving pet, a world-class family guardian, [and] a versatile canine athlete.” The
Doberman Pinscher Club of America reports these dogs require intelligent handling
but are versatile in activities, including search and rescue, obedience, and work as
a guide or therapy dog.
8. German shepherd
The German shepherd is eager to please and ready to work. And as the AKC re-
ports, this very active breed needs regular mental and physical exercise. However,
devotees love the breed for its loyalty, courage, and “the ability to learn and retain
commands for an amazing number of specialized jobs.”
The German Shepherd Dog Club of America reports simple training should begin
the moment your puppy arrives home. A German shepherd puppy can learn his
name and basic commands as early as 8 weeks old.
9. Pembroke Welsh corgi

The Pembroke Welsh corgi is an active little dog who loves having a job to do.
The AKC explains, “The Pembroke responds well to training and loves his family,
but he may try to herd you.” Corgis (and corgi owners) benefit from obedience
classes. And the AKC promises, “The time you spend in training, especially during
the first year of your pet’s life, will be repaid many times over by giving you a
well-behaved companion, one that is bonded to you and your family for the rest of
his life.”
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America that corgis “are intelligent dogs,
trainable and good with children.” Nonetheless, “this breed is bright and bossy —
if you aren’t in charge, they will happily assume the role and a problem is much
harder to correct than prevent.”
10. Golden retriever

The golden retriever makes a great companion for novice dog owners. This dog
wants to please. And as the AKC notes, “They have a joyful, playful approach to
life and maintain this childlike behavior for longer than some other breeds.”
According to the Golden Retriever Club of America, dogs — including golden
retrievers — are problem solvers and learn by trial and error. But your golden isn’t
the only one who will be learning during the process of training. “As you teach
your dog the steps necessary to learn the obedience exercises, he will respond cor-
rectly or incorrectly, and you must learn how to respond appropriately,” the club

f you call yourself a tequila lover, you
might be concerned about the reported
agave shortage resulting from the soaring
price of the spirit’s raw material. The spiky
bluish-green plant whose heart is used to make
tequila cost under 4 pesos (roughly $0.21) per
kilo in 2016. Today, the price is about six times
higher at 23 pesos per kilo ($1.26).
“Agave prices are cyclical,” says Jenna Fag-
nan, the president of Tequila Avión. “Tequila
comes from a plant that’s unlike, say, corn or
grain, which can grow back every year. It takes
seven to 10 years for an agave plant to grow.”
Fagnan says that the price per kilo can fluctu-
ate wildly during its lifecycle.
When Avión launched in 2010, the cost of
agave was less than 1 peso per kilo. The brand,
like others, has had to absorb the cost of far
more expensive raw material. So far, it hasn’t
passed that cost on to the consumer and doesn’t
plan to. But, Fagnan says, “It depends on how
long the price surge lasts and how long every-
one can hold out.”
It takes a little more than 11 pounds of agave
to make a bottle of tequila. Today, the average
blue agave plant, the kind required to make
tequila, weighs in at about 110 pounds or more.
Sounds like a healthy yield, right? And yet, the
tequila-producing region of Mexico, centered
on the state of Jalisco, has been plagued with
agave shortages for generations.
As the prolific producer of some of the best
tequilas on the market, Carlos Camarena ex-
plains that the cycle of shortage and glut has
repeated itself every 15 years or so for more
than a century. He says it stems from a combi-
nation of how long it takes for agave to reach
maturity and the simple fact of supply and de-
mand.
“When agave is scarce and expensive,
everyone wants to plant,” says Camarena.

beans instead grow agave. Seven or eight years
later, when the plants ripen, there’s an abun-
dance of agave on the market, and the price
