ABSTRACT

Background: The most common symptoms of major depression both in clinical and non-

clinical adolescent samples are reportedly depressed mood, concentration or thinking

problems, loss of interest and insomnia. Compared with childhood, several changes in the

prevalence and nature of depressive phenomena are seen during adolescent years, partly

deriving from puberty, partly from the psychosocial maturation of the adolescent. Among

these changes are the increase in the prevalence of depressive feelings, increase in the

prevalence of depressive disorders, shift in the sex ratio to female preponderance after

puberty, increase in the prevalence of mania, tendency of immediate grief reactions

following bereavement to be more severe and of longer duration in adolescence than in

childhood, increase in the frequency of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, and a steep

increase in suicide mortality.

Study Design: In order to assess the prevalence of depression among the senior high

students of Asian Institute of Computer Studies, a descriptive survey method was used.

As a descriptive study, we collected detailed information to know the sources of

depression among the students and identify how they feel when they are depressed. It

systematically described the situation or area of interest factually and accurately. It

allowed us researchers to understand and know their condition.

Participants: The respondents of this study are the Senior High School Students of

Asian Institute of Computer Studies comprising of 50 people, male and female.

Methods: The researchers personally administered the research instruments to the

respondents. We discussed the significance of the study and accomplished the

distribution of the instruments properly.

Conclusion: Due to the negative impact of depression on student’s life, such as

ineffective studies, poor academic performance and the general health status, putting

effective measures in place is pertinent to their academic success and general life. This is

done by identifying the main causes of depression which includes changes in lifestyle,

increased workload, new responsibilities, and interpersonal relationships and finding the

appropriate remedy. A lot of research have been done on depression and we hope that,

based on the analysis made, this thesis will be of great help in helping students to have an

excellent academic and personal life.
