Course description:
Through active participation in class, the student begins to develop the skills needed in
listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Vocabulary growth and oral work are
fundamental, with basic reading and writing skills. The student begins to learn how
language and culture are related. Cultural diversity is stressed.
Communication about self, family, school life, and the community are basic components
of this course.
Prerequisites:
None.
Priority standards and final proficiencies:
By the end of this course, students should achieve the skills of benchmark 2 of the
Portland Public Schools Standards for World Languages. Details here:

Assessment/evaluation/grading policy:
A – 90% or better; B – 80 % - 89%C – 70% - 79%D – 60% - 69%

Participation includes full participation and preparation for class; listening attentively
to classmates, instructor, audio materials or videos; responding to questions and
participating actively in all class activities.
Behavioral expectations:
Stay engaged, involved, and attentive during class.
Come to class prepared.
Be in your seat when the bell rings to be considered on time for class.
Turn off and put away all electronic devices before class begins. Keep all electronic
devices off and put away during the entire class period.
Food, beverages, and gum are not permitted. Water is ok.
We will maintain an attitude of mutual respect and mutual encouragement in class at all
times.
You will learn about the cultures of various Spanish-speaking countries through
literature, music, history, news and television programs, films, and guests.
Through guest speakers, newspaper articles, videos, and other presentations, you’ll learn
how Spanish language skills and enhance career choices.

Guest speakers from Spanish-speaking countries will visit the class to talk about cultural
differences, to provide opportunities to hear speakers of Spanish from various countries,
and to talk about travel opportunities.
Students will create projects such as travel pamphlets, posters which highlight cultural
events or countries, and / or creating and illustrating a very simple children's book.
Essential Skills and required Work Samples:
Students will respond vocally to input to indicate comprehension, even before they
can produce the language themselves. Later they will be able to respond with words, then
phrases, then complete sentences. Assessment will consist of evaluation of informal class
interactions, structured questions and answers, and more formal listening comprehension
assessments.
