1. INTRODUCTION 1
1. INTRODUCTION
The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the soil parameters for design of
foundation for proposed structure with particular reference to safe bearing capacity and
anticipated settlements.
The investigation work for this project was started on the instruction of Client. The
fieldwork was commenced on 28th September, 2017 and completed on 10th October, 2017.
The report has been prepared after careful study of all data collected during
fieldwork and laboratory testing and it deals with geotechnical properties of the sub-soil.

2. FIELD INVESTIGATION:
The aim and objective of the present study is to bring out the soil stratification,
strength and settlement characteristics of different strata based on which suitability of
different types of foundation could be analyzed. This is accomplished by borehole studies
including field & laboratory tests followed by the necessary interpretation and analysis.
The soil exploration programmed is drawn to find out the general stratification of soil
and related parameters, which when put to analysis would provide the best possible
knowledge of foundation behavior at this site. The programmed included:
i) Sinking boreholes at 16 predetermined locations. The termination depth of each
borehole is 30.00 m. Conducting Standard penetration Tests [SPT] at suitable
interval.
ii) Collection of disturbed/representative samples at suitable intervals.
iii) Collection of Undisturbed Samples at and from cohesive deposits only.
iv) Conducting necessary laboratory testing on collected soil samples.
A brief description of method of boring, field tests, collection of samples etc. and type
of equipments used are given below.
BORING:
The scope of this soil investigation is limited to One borehole in the location as
suggested (site plan enclosed). Boring through the soil was carried out by Auger and Wash
method to sink nominal 150 mm diameter borehole by using manually operated winch.
Suitable casings have been used upto 5.0 m below the existing ground level to prevent
cavity inside the borehole. During the process of boring, both undisturbed and disturbed
soil samples were collected at suitable intervals and at the change of strata whichever was
encountered earlier by open drive sampling method. Besides, S.P.T. Tests were also
conducted at suitable intervals and recorded.
Representative soil samples were collected frequently from auger, split spoon
sampler of standard Penetrometer and cutting shoe of undisturbed sampling assembly to
maintain a continuous record of strata encountered. All the samples were labeled and
placed in air-tight containers and shifted to the laboratory for identification and testing.
Sheet No 3 Job No. 2017/ NEST/1812 ISO 9001: 2008 Certified
During the field investigation, ground water observation was made. The standing
water level was measured in the borehole after 24 hours of removal of casings. These
levels of ground water are likely to change with normal seasonal variations.

4. LAB INVESTIGATION
The following laboratory tests are conducted on selected soil samples.
Unit Weight(t/m3)
Natural Moisture Content (%)
Liquid & Plastic Limit [Atterberg Limits](%)
Sieve & Hydrometer Analysis
Specific gravity
Consolidation Test
Triaxial Test
Unconfined Compression Test
Permeability
UNIT WEIGHT
It is the ratio of the weight [moist] and volume of the sample.
NATURAL MOISTURE CONTENT
It is the percentage loss of weight of sample on oven drying at or above 100˚c.
ATTERBERG LIMITS [LL &PL]
It is the moisture content at transition when soil starts behaving like liquid [LL] &plastic [PL].
SIEVE & HYDROMETER ANALYSIS
The percent content of gravel, sand, silt & clay of a sample are determined with the help of sieves
and principles of falling velocity of particles in a liquid.
SPECIFIC GRAVITY
It is ratio of the mass of a given volume of solids to the mass of an equal volume of water at 40 C.
CONSOLIDATION TEST
A sample in a mould is subjected to different stages of load and vertical compression of the sample
thickness is recorded at definite time intervals. Cc is found by using time-settlement curves.
TRIAXIAL TEST
3 Samples are taken in order to determine the C-Ф value of soil where the vertical compression of
each sample is taken at regular interval of Dial Gauge readings and the force exerted in all 3
directions. C-Ф value is obtained from a curve where deviator stress is plotted along X-axis and cell
pressure is plotted along Y-axis.
UNCONFINED COMPRESSION TEST (UC)
A special type of undrained unconsolidated triaxial test where all round confining pressure is kept
zero is performed on consolidated clay soil samples.
PERMEABILITY TEST (INDIRECT METHOD)
Llouden’s Equation has been used for determining the permeability of soil by indirect method by
taking Cv, mv from consolidation test into consideration.

6. SOIL PROFILE:
6.1 GENERAL
Soil profiles were drawn on the basis of analysis of samples obtained from 16
boreholes and presented in bore log, which may not be conclusive over the entire area.
The characteristics parameters of each individual stratum as obtained from laboratory
tests are also presented against the strata. The results of the Standard Penetration Tests
(S.P.T.) of each possible layer has also been recorded and shown against each respective
layer. A sub soil profile across the borehole representing. physical characteristics, strata-
wise, is shown. The ‘N’ values are also shown in the profiles as well as in the bore log data
sheet.

Based on study of field borehole data, field data and laboratory tests results, following average
design profile was considered:
Deep foundation in form of pile may be adopted. Considering BH-01 the Pile Capacity values are
derived based on the following assumptions,
a) Diameter of pile = 1000 mm.
b) Cut off level is considered as 2.00 meter.
c) Length of the pile Below cut-off Level is 19.00 meter.
d) Angle of Internal Friction, Φ= 330 (IS:6403:1981)
e) Applying a factor of safety, F.O.S** = 3.00 (Ref: IS: 2911:2010)
***Higher value of F.O.S has been considered taking in consideration of the following
aspects
1. Large Impact (or) Vibrating Load.
2. Properties of soil may deteriorate with time, especially the soil in 1st Layer.

** BH-16 has qu =26KN/m2 (or) 2.6 T/m2 in 1st layer, As per Table no.4 of IS:2911(Part
1/Sec2)- 2010),hence there will not be any lateral resistance in the 1st layer and considering
scour depth of 2m below length of pile, thus 6.0 m is considered as free length(L1).
