operate the laboratories as required by the work. Personnel once assigned to the laboratories shall not
be removed without the prior. approval of the Engineer.
Laboratory equipment and apparatus, specified in Appendix 9 are typical of what would expected to
be available in a laboratory established for a construction project such as this. ·
Materials, equipment and instruments in the laboratories and those used for field testing are to be
maintained and kept ready in standard operating condition at all times.
2 Typical Requirements
The main testing laboratory should have a minimum internal floor area of 60 sq.m. The field
laboratory should have minimum floor area 30m2 should be located close to the road taken up for
construction under the package.
An adjoining but separate covered sample storage shed of approx. 30m2, and a covered hard stand for
preliminary sample treatment, shall be provided.
The laboratory shall be provided with 240 volt, 50HZ electricity. Enough outlets with ground
connections shall be provided to accommodate the required testing equipment. Adequate lighting
facility to be approved all to the satisfaction and approval of the Engineer.
For normal testing, adequate storage of water and supply of the same at pressure shall be maintained
at the sinks including faucets. An adequate storage of water and pressure supply shall be maintained
for normal testing together with 2 sinks including faucets.
The floor of the building shall be rigid and adequate to support the operation of test equipment
without vibration and undue noise. ·
A minimum of Sm of work benches, 900mm high by 750 mm wide shall be provided and arranged as
directed by the Engineer. The work benches shall have tops covered with approved plastic laminate or
tin sheet, shall contain adjustable shelves and drawers and shall be constructed of I 9mm plywood. A
minimum of 6m of cupboards shall be constructed approximately 600mm above the workbenches.
These cupboards shall have a minimum of two 450mm high shelves approximately 300mm wide. All
cupboards shall be provided with doors.
The laboratory shall have a minimum of one exhaust fan, one ceiling fan with regulators and three
opening windows with blinds. ·
The laboratory shall be provided with double entrance doors wide enough to unload materials from

APPENDIX9
The laboratory shall be furnished and maintained with all equipment, apparatus and supplies
necessary to permit proper execution of all standard tests required by the Specifications. Lists of
specific laboratory equipment noted on the Drawings or described in the Specifications are intended
as an aid to the Contractor and should not be considered as a binding list nor as a recommendation to
purchase from a specific manufacturer. The Contractor shall submit to the Engineer for his approval, a
complete listing of the equipment, apparatus and supplies available in the laboratory. However, there
is no objection for the Contractor to get done certain specific tests such as concrete cube testing, LA
Abrasion Test, Aggregate Impact Value test etc, in another laboratory having such facilities. The
laboratory selected shall be approved by the Engineer and such arrangements shall be given to the
Engineer prior to commencement of works.
The quality controls of materials used in road construction projects require specialized test equipment.
The laboratories shall be equipped with all necessary test equipment to control the quality of materials
to be used on the Project. The test equipment shall be in good condition and calibrated in accordance
with the requirements of standards and testing specifications.
The Contractor shall provide all equipment, needed for the correct execution of the tests according to
the AASHTO, ASTM, BS and SLS standards mentioned. The equipment shall be of an acceptable
quality approved by the Engineer.
2. List of LaboratoryEquipment
The following listing of test equipment is given as a check list of likely required items and is related
to the construction control specified for the Project. Many of the items are easily broken or otherwise
rendered unusable and replacement shall be readily available, so that the control testing of critical
construction is not interrupted. The equipment as all times remains the property of the Contractor.
Mechanical loading press, suitable for the determination of the laboratory CBR, with all
fittings necessary, including two ranges of proving rings (0 to 10 KN and O to 50 KN)
IO CBR Moulds fitted with collars and base plates, for compaction and soaking and tripods fitted
with dial gauges (25mm travel, O.Olmm division) as per AASHTO.

B. Asphalt LaboratoryEquipment
The Specifications state that all asphalt delivered must have the supplier's test certificate giving the .
various parameters of the asphalt. Failure to produce these certificates may mean that the Contractor
has to test the asphalt at his own expense. These tests could also be required on any disputed asphalt.
The apparatus is specialized and expensive. It is therefore up to the Contractor to decide if he will
install such equipment in his laboratory or seek testing facilities elsewhere should the need arise. The
bitumen tests which may be required are as follows:
a) Softening point
b) Ductility
c) Loss on heating
d) Drop in penetration after heating
e) Solubility in carbon disulphide
f) Ash content
g) Specific gravity
h) Penetration
i) Marshall test apparatus
The laboratory equipment provided by the Contractor for testing of asphaltic materials and mixtures is
at the discretion of the Contractor, but given the limited quantities of· Asphalt involved in the
Contract, external sources for testing thought to be more appropriate.
2 Complete field density kits, sand displacement type, pouring cylinders suitable for fine and
coarse grained soils.
12 Standard steel cube moulds for concrete testing (15cm sides).
