Marathon
win By Meg Kennedy

Hot off the heels of beating Puffing Billy to the finish line,
local marathon runner, Brett Ellis, was able to beat the clock
in New Zealand last week, coming first in the Christchurch
Marathon.
Ellis, 23, finished the 42-kilometre marathon in two hours
and 27-minutes. Not only did the Bacchus Marsh local
make a new personal best time, but he beat the favourite,
2016 winner Dougal Thorburn from New Zealand, by a full
three minutes.
“It was a moment of joy and relief”, said Ellis, reflecting on
his thoughts while crossing the finish line.
“I got quite emotional…it was four to five months of hard
work, training and preparation flooding back,” he said.
Ellis won $1000 prize money for the marathon.
He said he was “overjoyed” to set a new personal record,
although he originally set out to complete the marathon in
2 hours and 25 minutes.
Ellis said he had to adjust himself to the conditions,
explaining that instead of looking at the watch, he decided
to go off his “gut feel” and factor in the weather and rain.
As for preparing for the different conditions of
Christchurch, which were “certainly colder” for Ellis, he
said that training in many frosty, early Bacchus Marsh
mornings helped him prepare for the icy weather.
But even Bacchus Marsh couldn’t prepare him for running
in the ‘red-zone’, areas of neglected road that are still
damaged by the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.
“It was a battle,” he said, explaining the ordeal was a
“mental test” that made him “come out a stronger runner.”
As for what’s next for Brett, it seems there is no stopping in
the near future.
Aside from looking at the Sunshine Coast Half-Marathon
in August for his next quest, back home, Brett has his eyes

30 YEARS EXPERIENCE The twos came out strong against an undermanned Redan team,
the attitude that when we were in their position they never took it
easy on us was instilled throughout the boys. The game was put to
bed at half time with a commanding 67-point lead. No prisoners
were taken in the second half as we ran away 95-point winners

Round 8 saw the Cobras take on the Swans in Alfredton. Both sides
put in a great effort, especially considering the cold wet conditions
that Ballarat turned on for us.
Junior Football
The Under 10 sides didn’t seem to mind the rain and all ran hard
and started to spread out more which is great to see. The Under 12
Reserves actually played a fairly strong game and gave 100 per-
cent but couldn’t seem to get anything on the score board. Bacchus

The Under 12 Seniors weren’t at their strongest; they had a slow
start but built the game up through the third quarter. They had
great tackles and were putting their head over the ball but Ballarat
10 Church Street, Bacchus Marsh, got their wind in the last quarter and the boys couldn’t get it back.
