readings; interpret readings, and determine necessary action.

Objective

Describe the vehicle being worked on:

Year ___________ Make __________________________ Model __________________________
VIN __________________________ Engine type and size __________________________
Describe general operating condition:

Type of gas analyzer used: ___________________________________________

Check the gases that the tool will measure: HC ____ CO ____ CO2 _____ O2 _____ NOx ____
In what units of measurement is each of these gases measured?
HC __________________ CO __________________ CO2 _______________
O2 ___________________ NOx _________________
Check with your instructor for this information—The maximum acceptable readings for this
year and model vehicle are:
HC __________________ CO __________________ CO2 _______________
O2 ___________________ NOx _________________

4. Make sure the meters on the exhaust gas analyzer are properly calibrated Task Completed អ
and adjusted.
5. Block the wheels of the vehicle and set the parking brake. Task Completed អ
6. Position the analyzer so that it is easily read from the driver’s seat of the Task Completed អ
vehicle.
NOTE: It takes a few seconds for the analyzer to measure the exhaust gases, so watch the
analyzer after the event not during it!
7. Start the engine. Task Completed អ
8. Record the exhaust readings from starting.
HC __________ CO __________ CO2 ___________
O2 ___________ NOx _________
9. After start-up, the exhaust readings will settle at some point for a very short
period of time. Record those readings.
HC __________ CO __________ CO2 ___________
O2 ___________ NOx _________
10. Once the engine has been warmed to normal operating conditions, the
exhaust readings will stabilize. What are the readings with the engine
warmed up?

O2 ___________ NOx _________
11. Turn off the engine and put away the exhaust gas analyzer. Task Completed អ
Describe what you observed and explain to the best of your knowledge why
the readings changed.
