Dominican order(real name Order of Preachers):

Foundation:

-Founded in 1216 by Saint Dominic and approved by Pope Honorius III in the papal bulls Religiosam
Vitam and Nos attendetes

-Founded to preach the gospel and combat heresy.

-Common life(unity through obedience, higher love due to chastity, higher dependence on each other
due to poverty), celebration of liturgy and prayer, observance of vows, study of truth, apostolic ministry
of the Word(bring souls to Jesus by preaching the Word)

Philippine context:

-Domingo de Salazar(spent 23 years of his mission in Mexico and Florida) was appointed first bishop of
ecclesiastical see of the Philippines. Wanted to use Philippines as a gateway to evangelize China
eventually

-Many died/abandoned the mission in Mexico out of the initial 40 he had with him.

-13 friars and 2 lay brothers made it to Cavite on July 21, 1587, and they travelled to Manila on foot and
arrived there on July 25. After the completion of their motherhouse, 4 priests were assigned to Bataan,
6 were assigned to Pangasinan, and the rest assigned to Manila

-Founded many towns named Santo Domingo in Bataan and Pangasinan. Bataan was relatively
successful. Pangasinan faced opposition and there were casualties but eventually spread.

-Factors that contributed to Pangasinan rejection: Spanish abuses, devotion to pagan gods and religious
people, revolts

-Established San Gabriel Hospital, UST in 1611, and Colegio de San Juan de Letran in 1620

-Assigned Cagayan Valley in 1596. Even more casualties. Even harder to convert Nueva Vizcaya and
Isabela, but they eventually converted too

-Churches: Ivana Church in Bataan, Tumauini Church in Isabela
