RESUMEN:
En 1853 la Real Compañía Asturiana de Minas, instalada en España desde la apertura de su
primera explotación en Arnao en 1833, diversifica su producción hacia la metalurgia del zinc, un
material de consumo creciente en Europa. A partir de ese momento la empresa centra sus
esfuerzos en esta actividad, generando la adquisición de nuevos establecimientos mineros así
como la continua apertura de secciones y talleres relacionados con la producción y el manejo
del metal en sí.
El propósito de la presente comunicación es analizar cómo, cuándo y por qué se crea una de
estas secciones: el Taller de Zingueros de Arnao, un taller de obreros especializados en la
transformación y aplicación del zinc a elementos de construcción, que no solo realizaban
piezas que en ocasiones alcanzaban un alto valor estético –por su especial trato o su
decoratividad—, sino que también se ofrecían como mano de obra para viajar y realizar los
trabajos in situ, formando equipos altamente cualificados.

ABSTRACT:
In 1853 the Royal Asturian Mining Company, placed in Spain since the inauguration of its first
prospection in Arnao in 1833, diversifies its production to the metallurgic of the Zinc, a recent
consumption material in Europe. Since that moment the company focuses its efforts in this
activity, generating the acquisition of new mining stablishments as well as the continuous
opening of sections and workshops related with the production and handling of that specific
metal.
The purpose of this communication is analyze how, when and why it’s created one of this
sections: The Zincsmiths Workshop of Arnao, a workers workshop specialized in the
transformation and application of Zinc to building elements, that they not only performed in

pieces that in some cases reached to very high esthetic values –because of their special
treatment or decorativeness - but also because they offered themselves to travel and perform
the job in situ, building highly qualified teams.

Uno de los destinos más frecuentes del zinc laminado era su empleo como
material de construcción, bien fuera en aplicaciones generales de obra –
canalización de aguas pluviales, impermeabilización de fachadas, etc.—, bien
fuera en las denominadas aplicaciones especiales del zinc (Real Compañía
Asturiana de Minas, 1927), es decir, las destinadas a balaustradas, remates,
buhardillas, cresterías y elementos ornamentales varios.
