DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION

TOPIC/ LESSON Volcano Hazards

NAME
CONTENT The learners demonstrate understanding of signs of impending volcanic eruptions
STANDARDS and the following potential volcano-related hazards: Lava Flow, Volcanic Gases,
Pyroclastic Flows, Tephra Falls and Ballistic Projectiles and Lahar.
PERFORMANCE The learners develop a family emergency plan to guide them on what to do before,
STANDARDS during and after a volcanic eruption.
The learners could be able to assessed the awareness and preparedness of Siena
Community on Volcano Hazards through Action Research.
FORMATION The learner becomes an active or responsible member of the community which
STANDARD can be manifests from his / her being aware and prepared when a volcanic disaster
came.
LEARNING The learners:
COMPETENCIES 1. explain various volcano-related hazards;
2. differentiate among different volcano hazards;
3. recognize signs of an impending volcanic eruption;
4. interpret different volcano hazard maps; and
5. apply appropriate measures/interventions before, during, and after a
volcanic eruption.
TIME 7 days
ALLOTMENT
MATERIALS Netbook, TV, book

LESSON DAY 1
OUTLINE TOPIC: Volcanic Gases
MOTIVATION:
A picture of erupted Volcano will be presented to the class. The students
will be asked on what are the effects of volcano that erupted.

LESSON INPUT:
Definition of Volcanic Gases
Dangers brought by volcanic gases
Types of volcanic gases and their effects
Mitigation measures for volcanic gases

EVALUATION/FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT:
In situations where evacuation cannot be carried out right away, what
personal safety measures can one adopt as protection from the effects of
volcanic gases?

(with reporting from designated students)

DAY 2
TOPIC: Lava Flow
MOTIVATION:
Photos of lava flowing from the volcano. The students will guess what will
be the topic all about based on the pictures being shown to them.
LESSON INPUT:
Definition of lava flow
Types of lava flow
Effects of lava flow and what makes it dangerous
Mitigation on the effects of lava flow

EVALUATION/FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT:
How does the amount of viscosity affect the rate of flow of lava?

(with reporting from designated students)

DAY 3
TOPIC: Pyroclastic Flow
MOTIVATION:
Picture of volcano showing a pyroclastic flow will be presented to the class.

LESSON INPUT:
Definition of pyroclastic flows
Process of the occurrence of pyroclastic flows
Types of pyroclastic flows
Effects of pyroclastic flows
Mitigation on the effects of pyroclastic flows

EVALUATION/FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT:
Why is it that people are so foolhardy to live so close to volcanoes, when
there is obvious danger from eruption processes such as pyroclastic
flows?

(with reporting from designated students)

DAY 4
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
Volcanic Gases
Lava Flow
Pyroclastic Flow

DAY 5
TOPIC: Tephra Falls and Ballistic Projectiles
MOTIVATION:
A picture of a cannonball will be presented to the class. This will be
associated to the topic which is ballistic projectile. Together with ballistic
projectile tephra falls will be introduced afterwards.

LESSON INPUT:
Definition of Tephra falls and Ballistic Projectiles
Types of Tephra falls and Ballistic Projectiles according to their size, shape,
chemical composition, origin and texture
Effects and dangers brought by Tephra falls and Ballistic Projectiles
Measures in Mitigating the effects of Tephra falls and Ballistic Projectiles

EVALUATION/FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT:
What was the biggest cause of deaths during the Pinatubo ashfalls? What
contributed to these incidents?

(with reporting from designated students)

DAY 6
TOPIC: Lahar
MOTIVATION:
Video presentation showing the effects of lahar. There will be a random
question to be raised on some students about their ideas on lahar.

LESSON INPUT:
Definition of lahar
How lahar being generated
Faces of lahar
How to tame lahar

EVALUATION/FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT:
What are the components and conditions needed to generate lahar?

(with reporting from designated students)

DAY 7
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
Tephra falls and Ballistic Projectiles
Lahar
