What is corruption?

Corruption is wrongdoing on the part of an authority or powerful party through means that are
illegitimate, immoral, or incompatible with ethical standards. Corruption often from
patronage and is associated with bribery.

TYPE OF CORRUPTION :

There are two major types of corruption:

Petty Corruption means the corruption which is done on the small scale or on the low-level.

Grand Corruption means the corruption which is done in the big scale or in the high level.

Grand Corruption is further categorized as:

Political Corruption: To win the election, some political leaders try to lure the voters by
offering them wine, wealth and others types of direct or indirect benefits. Example: kidnapping,
injustice etc

Administrative Corruption :When officers like IAS and IPS, clerks, peons, etc. are involved,
its called administrative corruption. Example: Officers and/or clerks of govt. offices demand
money from public even to do their legal tasks.

Professional Corruption: It means related to business. It includes duplicating medicines,

duplicating import items/theft items, duplicating hygienic products, mixture in eatables etc.
Mixture in spices, stones in cereals, animal fats in ghee, kerosene in petrol etc. are under
professional corruption.

petty Corruption is further categorized as:

Registration office : This is something where the public also tries to bribe to get their job
done, when the requirements are not met by the public, Like Traffic constable , Judicial system ,
Entrance Exams , Government employment posting

Public Corruption: Public office is misused for private gain. Such as police receive a money for
personal gain and drop any criminal offence.

Quranic verses and Hadith against bribery and corruption:

These are some verses of Quran which forbids us to indulg orphans and poor. By giving bribery
we are unjust to the person who is harmed by it and also to the community and nation.

“And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to you [to] consume a
partition of wealth of people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful]” (chapter 2, verse 188)

The one who takes bribe and the one who gives it will both be in hell.
Causes of Corruption
We have talked about corruption, its types, now let me tell you the reasons behind corruption.

And when it is said to them, ‘Do not cause corruption on the earth,’ they say, ‘We are but
reformers’. Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive (it) not.” (Q.
2:11-12).

There are some points I would like to tell you.

 Lack of accountability Lack of ethics and morals in the life of peoples

 Lack of Unity in public ,
 Lack of effective management and organization.
 Lack of economically stability.
 Lack of effective leadership.
 Lack of values.
 Lack of patriotism.
 Lack of good education.
 Lack of employment.
 Lack of satisfaction.
 Low Pay scales/ Wages.
 Low Job opportunities.
 Lack of Strict and fast punishments

All of these cause lead towards increasing corruption in the developing countries and decreasing
the growth and development.

Effects of corruption on people

Lack of quality in services: In a system with corruption there is no quality of service. To
demand quality one might need to pay for it. This is seen in many areas like municipality,
electricity, distribution of relief funds etc.

Lack of proper justice: Due to corruption in the police system, the investigation process goes
on for decades. This lets the culprits roam free and even perform more crimes.
Poor Health and hygiene: In countries with more corruption one can notice more health
problems among people. There will be no fresh drinking water, proper roads, quality food grains
supply, milk adulteration, etc.

These low quality services are all done to save money by the contractors and the officials who
are involved.

There are other effects of corruption:

Lack of faith and trust on the governments: People vote to a ruler based on their faith in him/
her. But if found to be involved in corruption people lose faith in them and may not vote next
time.

Decrease in foreign investment: There are many incident where in foreign investments which
were willing to come to India have gone back owing to heavy corruption in the government
bodies.

Solution

“And O my people! Give full measure and weight in justice and reduce not the things that are
due to the people, and do not commit mischief in the land, causing corruption.” (Surah Hud
11:85)

It can be only possible if people can understand and start to believe the values of ethics and
morality in their life. People will start to believe that their life is accountable if they really start to
believe in GOD, in oneness of GOD and if they really start to live life on the way which GOD
has chosen for mankind.Ethics and morals should be taught to the children’s at very early age so
that, they must know that what is legal and what is illegal.
