Lesson  Idea  Name:    Surveys  and  Bar  Graphs
Content  Area:    Math
Grade  Level(s):    3rd
Content  Standard  Addressed:

MGSE3.MD.3  Draw  a  scaled  picture  graph  and  a  scaled  bar  graph  to  represent  a  data  set  with  several
categories.  Solve  one-‐  and  two-‐step  “how  many  more”  and  “how  many  less”  problems  using  information
presented  in  scaled  bar  graphs.  For  example,  draw  a  bar  graph  in  which  each  square  in  the  bar  graph  might
represent  5  pets.

Universal  Design  for  Learning  (UDL):

This  lesson  fosters  Universal  Design  for  Learning  because  it  offers  different  forms  of  representation:  teacher,
student,  visual,  and  hands  on  points  of  view.  Each  learner  may  benefit  from  different  forms  of
representations  and  this  lesson  offers  that  to  ensure  each  learner’s  need  are  met.  Further,  Excel  Spreadsheet
is  adjustable  software.  If  there  are  visually  impaired  learners,  the  software  can  be  increased  in  size,  or  color
contrasts  can  be  created.  Lastly,  larger  keyboard  sizes  can  be  used  for  students  that  struggle  with  fine  motor
skills.

Lesson  idea  implementation:
In  this  lesson,  the  teacher  will  integrate  real  world  problems  with  collecting  data  and  creating  a  visual
representation  of  that  data.  The  teacher  will  start  by  talking  to  students  about  how  to  help  keep  the
environment  clean,  as  this  will  be  the  topic  of  data  collecting.  The  teacher  will  then  discuss  with  students  how
to  collect  and  record  data.  Individually  students  will  have  time  to  create  questions  such  as  how  many  times  a
week  do  you  recycle  or  how  many  times  a  week  do  you  turn  the  light  off  when  you  leave  a  room?
Students  will  then  walk  around  to  survey  each  of  their  classmates  and  record  their  findings  on  their  sheet.
They  will  then  pull  out  a  computer  will  Excel  Spreadsheet.  The  teacher  will  guide  the  students  in  how  to  input
data  and  create  a  graph  utilizing  pictures.  Once  students  have  created  their  graphs,  they  will  be  required  to
ask  questions  about  their  qualitative  data:  How  many  more,  how  many  less,  which  had  the  least,  which  had
the  most?

Basic  Productivity  Tools  (BPT)
This  lesson  not  only  allows  students  to  investigate  qualitative  data,  they  become  active  learners  and
producers.  They  learn  to  physically  collect  data,  compile  what  they’ve  learn,  and  interpret  what  they’ve
learned.  All  of  these  aspects  pushes  their  level  thinking  up  the  Bloom’s  Taxonomy  levels  through  applying,
analyzing,  evaluating,  and  creating.

Reflective  Practice:  To  extend  this  lesson,  students  can  report  their  data  to  the  principal  and  other  staff
members  of  the  school.  They  can  offer  a  solution  of  ways  to  “go  green”  around  the  school.  Their  data  sets
that  they  collected  can  be  published  and  used  as  support  of  their  proposal.  This  also  can  be  adapted  to  a  ELA
lesson  by  allowing  students  to  write  an  informative  essay  based  on  their  collected  data  and  further  research.
