Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Students who require support during this project can have access to Big
Keys if they have partial visual impairments or if they find it easier to type with. If students are unable to type
or write down their thoughts they can use the program Dragon Dictation, which will turn their spoken words
into text. Students that find it easier can also listen along with the audio instructions for the PowerPoint
template, and there is also a transcript of the PowerPoint audio for students that need to visually read the
text instead of try and listen along.
Lesson idea implementation: I will introduce the assignment to the 5th grade students by presenting my
PowerPoint, so that students can use it as a template/guide to create their own presentation on “How the
Great Depression and New Deal affected the lives of millions of Americans.” They will use their prior
knowledge on the topic (if they have any), but this will be an opportunity for students to research the 5
events/people required by the standard. They must have 3-5 bullet points of information on the
event/person, as well as an image. They can be as creative as they like with the PowerPoint as long as they
have all the required information. They will work in groups of 4-5 students, and each group will present their
presentations to the class.
As a class we will discuss the information the students have researched and I will add important information
that the students may have not included. Students will be graded on the presentation, information, and how
well they worked in a group. Once we have completed our presentations I will give students a quiz to make
sure they understood and remembered the content they learned/researched.

Reflective Practice: The students are capable of researching topics on their own/as a group, as well as
creating a PowerPoint to display their research. They now have the option to create a presentation whenever
they do a research project. This was used as an introductory activity; however, this could have been a
concluding lesson where students used only the information from class activities/readings. Students could

have used the information they created the presentation with and wrote a short essay to again show their
knowledge but in a more formal manner.
