Armistice and 14 Points

27th Sep - “Peace couldn’t be obtained through… bargain”


1918 - Germany asked for an Armistice and accepting “as a basis for peace
negotiations”.
- Took control of the agenda by devising 14 points and withdrawal of
troops.
- No discussion from French/ British government regarding the points.
23rd Oct - Unconditional surrender (Theodore Roosevelt) or abdication of Kaiser.
1918 - Wilson then wanted peace base of 14 points. However, France and
Britain were uncertain by what they meant, not been consulted.
- Peace based on “national self-determination and protection of
minorities”.
4th Nov - Allied governments agreed to make peace “laid down” by Wilson.
1918 - Added to it was the compensation for all damage done to allied
civilians and their property.
9th Nov - Forced abdication of Kaiser.

Wilson’s 14 Points

1. No secret treaties.
2. Free access to the sea in peace time and war time.
3. Free trade between countries.
4. Disarmament.
5. Colonies to have a say in their future.
6. German troops to leave Russia.
7. Independence for Belgium.
8. France to regain Alsace-Lorraine.
9. Frontier between Austria and Italy to be adjusted.
10. Self determination for the people of eastern Europe.
11. Serbia to have access to the sea.
12. Self determination for the people in the Turkish Empire.
13. Poland to become an independent state with access to the sea.
14. League of Nations to be set up.
