Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Recognise importance of punctuation and correct text structure
2. Add missing punctuation to sentences

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

 Sentence cards with mistakes (missing punctuation,
missing capital letters for start of sentence and
proper nouns)
 Punctuation cards for intro activity
LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)
Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:
Students were able to achieve the two learning objectives throughout this lesson, however more so the second one
as they completed the activity well. I found that when they truly focus on adding punctuation they are all capable
however it slips their mind during their writing (when the focus is on the content more so than the punctuation). Their
work suggests to me that they are forgetting the importance of using punctuation and let it slide when they write daily.

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

My favourite moment of this lesson was making a ‘pact’ with Lawrence and Cohen about using capital letters when
they start a sentence because days later, when they were writing their narratives they have called me over to say they
are keeping our pact and remembering capital letters! That felt like a success. With group lessons I feel like I can see
exactly where each child is at and work with them to embed in their minds the importance of certain concepts – such
as punctuation. An area of improvement for myself could be adding a greater focus on WHY we use punctuation
rather than just when, as this might make adding punctuation a more natural thing for them in their writing.

Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:

 WALT: edit for spelling, punctuation and capital letters

9:10am
 During literacy groups, Lions will work in the back mat with Miss Langer for an
activity based on editing and correcting sentences with missing punctuation,
capital letters and some spelling mistakes

 To begin with, read out a sentence with no punctuation to show students the
importance of rereading and editing their work for mistakes:
“i went to the beach with my mum it was so good i was so excited and tired Punctuation cards
when i got home i fell asleep overall i had a great day”

 Explain that when you don’t use full stops or commas your work is very hard to
read for the reader as they do not have a chance to take a breath! Also, tell
them that using other punctuation such as exclamation marks can add to the
excitement of their writing.

 One at a time, have them use punctuation cards to fix the mistakes in the
sentence.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

 Students will be given cards with sentences containing spelling mistakes and
9:20am missing punctuation.
Sentence cards
 They will need to read the cards, circle the mistakes as a group but then all
students will write the correct sentence on a whiteboard.

 Once they finish all of the cards, if they do, give them well known short stories
without punctuation and have them rewrite the short stories in their books with
Maths books
correct punctuation, spelling and sentence structure.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

 Check their writing to make sure they have included all correct punctuation and
mark them off on the assessment check list.

 Write some sentences on the board and have each of them correctly fix the
mistakes.

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

9:30am
 Put their books away and move quietly from back to front mat and wait quietly
for instruction from Mrs C.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
Key:
✔ = Objective Met
✘ = Objective Not Met
O = Some improvement but may require extra help

31st May Comments

2018
Carla Sometimes forgetting capital letters but fixing her mistakes after rereading.
Chloe Was adding full stops at the end of the line, mid-sentence. Might need to reiterate that full
stops go at the end of an idea rather than just at the end of a physical line.
Lawrence Still struggling to reinforce the importance of capital letters after full stops.
Cohen Full stops are there but forgets to add capital letters.

All students seem to be aware of their mistakes when I point out the missing capital
letters and forgotten full stops, but they do not edit as they go along. Might need a
follow up lesson to work on the importance of punctuation and why we use it.
