BACKGROUND

Hai Telecommunications Limited (Herein known as Hai) owned by CEC Liquid

Telecommunications Limited. (CLT)

Hai Zambia is a licensed Internet Service Provider (ISP) that has been operational in Zambia for
fourteen years now. Apart from internet and associated services, its other product offering
includes provision of corporate connectivity, supply and installation of ICT products and services
and a host of other services typical of the ICT industry. Hai Zambia has successfully implemented
large scale ICT projects in Zambia for corporate organizations such as major finance institutions,
all copper mining companies, government and non-governmental organizations.

The main objective of Hai’s association with CEC Liquid through its joint venture was to combine
the strength of CEC’ liquid world class optic fibre network and know-how, with Hai’s best-of-
breed service offerings to deliver optic fibre solutions to customers across Zambia and the
surrounding region. In this regard, Hai and CEC Liquid have successfully built optic fibre
metropolitan networks in central business districts of Zambia’s major towns. Another milestone
achieved by Hai is the initiative to link its customers through its fully redundant fibre internet
supplied from the SAT3 underground fibre along the western coast of Africa and CEC Liquid via
interconnection with Seacom on the eastern coast of Africa. The reliance on fibre solutions has
assisted Hai to markedly improve the speed and availability of its internet service.

ACHIEVEMENTS

In the recent years Hai has won several international awards for quality service. Hai was originally
established as an ICT equipment supplier and network installer. However, due to our outstanding
services, more and more of our clients requested that we provide them with internet service, as
this was a critical element of their networks. They also requested for a single point of contact for

all their ICT related infrastructure services. Because of this, Hai established an Internet Service
Provider (ISP) in Zambia, having acquired an ISP licence in June 2005.

Furthermore, in December 2005, Hai was successfully chosen as the preferred last mile service
provider by Copper belt Energy Corporation (CEC) for their Fibre Optic Network that links 8 towns
in the Copper belt. Subsequent to this Hai installed metropolitan and last mile fibers in all
Copperbelt towns, Lusaka, Lumwana, Solwezi and Livingstone which avail fiber to fiber
connectivity to CEC, ZESCO and international networks.

Hai pioneered the provision of fibre to the premises (FTTP) in Zambia which allowed businesses
and other large institutions to have end to end fibre connections. As fibre remains the preferred
communication technology this allowed our customers to experience the real benefit of reliable
and faster communication services that are unmatched by wireless technologies.

In addition, our links with international fibre optic providers enable us to interconnect with the
rest of the world in real time. This has enabled us to successfully provision regional as well as
intercontinental links for our multinational customers with ability to provide links that range from
2Mb/s up to 155Mb/s.

Further, our agreement with CEC demands a minimum uptime of 99% with a targeted uptime of
99.9% on all wide area networks (WAN) and internet links. In this regard, Hai has developed
service level agreements with its customers that guarantee certain minimum level of service.

NATIONAL NETWORK COVERAGE

Hai’s Joint Venture with CEC and partnership with ZESCO allows us to offer a huge Fibre Optic
network throughout Zambia. Our network extends from Sesheke to Lumwana as depicted in the
Hai fibre metros diagram below.

INTERNET FIBRE

Hai is supplied broadband internet capacity using optic fibre cable that inscribes the African
continent as depicted in the diagram below.

SAT-3/WASC or South Atlantic 3/West Africa Submarine Cable is a submarine communications

cable linking Portugal and Spain to South Africa, with connections to several West African
countries along the route and has a capacity of 340 Gbit/s. This link interconnects into Zambia
using the Namibia Telecoms Network that interconnects with Zambia through the Katimamulilo/
Sesheke boarder post.

On the Eastern coast of Africa, are the Seacom, Easy Telecom and other cables that interconnect
with Europe as well as Middle East and Asian regions. These links interconnect with Zambia via
the CEC-Liquid Telecoms cable and ultimately enter Zambia at the Zimbabwe/Zambia boarder of
Kariba/Chirundu. CEC-Liquid is a sister company of Hai’s with Copperbelt Energy Corporation as
a common shareholder in both companies.

The fibre internet connections have enabled Hai to provide internet at speeds three (3) times
that of VSAT.

CONTENTION RATIOS

All fibre optic connections are offered as full duplex which means if you purchase a 2Mb/s fibre
optic link you get:

• Last Mile 1:1 2Mb/s UPLOAD/ 2Mb/s DOWNLOAD

• Leased Circuit 1:1 2Mb/s UPLOAD/ 2Mb/s DOWNLOAD
• Fibre Internet 1:1 2Mb/s UPLOAD/ 2Mb/s DOWNLOAD

Contended services are also available using the ratio 1:2.5. However, Hai prides itself in the
provision of dedicated services which are more suited for large institutions or organizations.
Service is provided with full complement of monitoring tools for which graphs may be generated.

TECHNICAL OVERVIEW

The Hai network consists of 3 Major hubs, located in Lusaka, Kitwe and Livingstone. The actual
network stretches from Sesheke in the South, to Lumwana in the North West of the country. Hai
has a Network Operating Centre (NOC) located in Lusaka, covering the central and Southern
regions, and Kitwe houses the NOC for the Copperbelt and Northeastern provinces.

Hai’s network consists of 4 main types of Media carriers, namely; Fibre optic, Radio, Copper and
VSAT. Fibre optic is the main backbone of the network, used to connect the major towns running
between Lumwana and Sesheke.

The Copperbelt region has a fibre optic ring connecting to all the major towns of the Province.
Radio links operating in licensed frequencies may be used for the last mile connection to our
client’s network. Copper and 2.4Ghz wireless is used within the customer LANs. VSATs have been
deployed to connect sites for our customers in areas not covered by fibre networks.

introduced a fibre to the home (FTTH) service otherwise referred to as fibroniks in Lusaka. In the
case of institutional customers service may be extended as part of the package to residences of
key personnel of corporate/institutional customers as Executive Links. Terms and conditions
apply for such services.

Fibroniks is the most reliable service on the market today and gives you up to 10Mbps download.
You could also get a broadband link with the widest range of coverage countrywide and gives the
unlimited package to suit you and your family’s needs. Also you could get a dedicated satellite

 Samson Longwe- Managing director

 Samson has studied Economics and Business Administration from UNZA and CBU,
respectively. He was seconded from CEC where he was Business Development
Manager. He has over 18 years’ experience of varied industry experience in the
management of strategic and commercial activities.

 Evans Silavwe – Director of Operations

 Evans is an accomplished Electronics and Telecommunications Engineer holding a

PhD and MSc from the University of Leeds and a BEng from the University of
Zambia. He has over 15 years of experience in building communication networks
and their associated services, managing teams and delivering value for the
business.

 Suzyo Chipeta - Technical Director

 Suzyo holds a BSc in Computing and Information Systems from Portsmouth

University in the UK and a diploma in Telecommunications and Electronics
Engineering. He has over 10 year’s extensive experience in design,
implementation and integration of ICT systems. He has also spent his last 5 years
in top Technical management while serving to deliver and improve the Internet in
Zambia.

 Emmanuel Mumba- Head of Sales and marketing

 Emmanuel holds a Bachelor of Science Degree (University of Zambia), a Diploma

in Marketing and is an associate member of the Zambia Institute of Marketing
(AZIM). He has a wealth of experience in Marketing, Sales and Advertising with
over 15 years’ experience at senior management level.

 Mwape E Chilufya- Finance Director

 Mwape is an ACCA qualified Chartered Accountant with over 10 years’ experience

in the Energy industry and Telecoms industries. He was seconded from
Copperbelt Energy Corporation to the position of Finance Manager at Hai and later
went on to head the Finance Function at Hai Technology Alliance Africa.

 Mabel is a CIMA qualified Chartered Accountant with over 15 years’ experience in

the Energy and Telecommunications industries at senior level. She was seconded
from Copperbelt Energy Corporation where she was Business Planning Manager.

 Moono Sindowe – Head Human Resources

 Moono holds a BA Degree in Business Management and Industrial Psychology and

is an associate member of the Zambia Institute of Human Resources Management.

 She joined Hai Zambia initially under the Commercial Department but was later
upgraded to establish the company’s HR Department, which she currently heads.
She has extensive knowledge in organizational dynamics, Industrial Psychology
and general Human Resources Management.
