Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Students will be able to use the timeline as a reference or a study tool.
The timeline can be read by students or read to students by the teacher. The timeline is not only accessible at
school, but also easily accessible for students at home.
Lesson idea implementation: As we (students) begin the westward expansion in America, we will discuss the
causes and events of the war of 1812. The teacher(myself) will begin the lesson by presenting the class with
the timeline of the War of 1812. This war of 1812 timeline outlines the major battles of the War of 1812. The
timeline will take about 25-30 minutes.
For the lesson, students will learn about and be asked to compare key figures in the War of 1812. I will
prompt the students by asking them to name all of the important people from the War of 1812. I will then ask
what they remember about these important people. We will then begin to have a discussion on these
important people in which students will be instructed to take notes. The students will then be split into
groups of 4. The students in each group will pick two of the important people in the War of 1812 that they
find comparable to one another. The students will then be handed supplies and be shown how to create a
foldable Venn diagram. Students will be allowed to use technology such as computers and iPads to do their
research, as well as reference the teacher created timeline. They will write characteristics of each person on
their designated flap and similarities in the middle of the two flaps. The students will then present their
information to the class.

Reflective Practice: This assignment could impact student learning by allowing students to do their own
research. When students do their own research, they become responsible for their own learning. When they
are able to feel a sense of ownership, they become more engaged and invested in their academic tasks. In
order to extend this lesson, I would have groups of students create their own timeline of one important
person in the War or 1812.
