the invaluable contributions of
Hispanic peoples.
This year’s festivities include
a Hispanic Lunch from 11 a.m.
to 1:30 p.m. at The Rock Café
on Sept. 28, which will be
followed by the live, dramatic
performance “Portraits of
Courage: Latinos Shaping a
Nation” at 7 p.m. in G. Mennen
William’s Auditorium; and guest
speaker West Cosgrove will
discuss immigration issues at
7 p.m. Sept. 30 in Business
Building, Room 111.
“It’s a great idea for students of
all backgrounds to attend this
month’s events so that they can
learn more about themselves
and others,” OMSS Assistant
Director Michael Wade said.
“All students can benefit
from attending these events,
and other diversity events,
at Ferris,” Carvalho-Pinto,
who also is the HSO advisor,
added. “Students must learn
about other cultures; they
should realize that once they
embark on their careers, they
will encounter many people
who are different and come
from different backgrounds. I
think Ferris does a great job of
cultures through these types of

DON’T LET HOLIDAY SWEETS
GO TO YOUR TEETH?
(NewsUSA) - The holidays
bring culinary delights, ranging
from sparking cocktails to
potato latkes to Yule logs. Many
bemoan the effects of extra
calories when it comes to pants
sizes, but few consider what
all that celebrating does to the
mouth.
Every time we eat a food
containing sugar, we feed the
destructive bacteria that live
in our mouths. As the bacteria
chow down, they release an
acid. The acid wears down
tooth enamel, leading to
cavities and eventually to gum
disease. As gum disease is the
number-one cause of halitosis,
or bad breath, indulging in
too many hearty nogs and
sugar cookies could leave
you standing alone under the
mistletoe.
The holidays might also mean
more red wine and post-dinner
coffees, which can eventually
lead to stained teeth.
Americans feeling the holiday
spirit don’t need to give up
sugarplums -- they simply need
to be a little more diligent about
tooth care. Here are some tips:
* Stay away from the buffet.
Continuous snacking means
that your teeth are constantly
exposed to sugar and the
ensuing bacterial acid bath.
Stick to meals. If you’re at the
sort of party where grazing is
encouraged, fix yourself a plate
instead of standing by the chips
and dip.
* Avoid sticky foods. Foods that
stick to the teeth are more likely
to cause problems than foods
that are easily washed away.
Even healthy choices, like
dried fruit, can feed bacteria.
Likewise, sucking on hard
candies means that sugars
stay in your mouth for a longer
amount of time. If you want
something sweet, don’t go for
gummy bears or candy canes
-- try a mug of hot cocoa.
* Drink water. No matter what
you eat or drink, follow it with
a glass of water. The water
will help rinse sugar from your
mouth.
* Try oral care probiotics. Oral
care probiotics, like EvoraPlus

help make up the difference.
Probiotics, or good bacteria,
adhere to tooth and gum
surfaces, where they leave
less room for harmful bacteria
to attach and grow. With less

toothbrush and toothpaste, and
brush your teeth after you eat.

A LOOK AT GAUCHER
DISEASE ? A RARE GENETIC
DISORDER
(NewsUSA) - Many people
are unaware that there are
approximately 7,000 identified
rare diseases that affect about
25 million people in the United
States. Rare diseases are
considered orphan diseases
when fewer than 200,000
people are affected. Many
orphan diseases are genetic
disorders. Gaucher disease is
one of these genetic disorders.
Gaucher disease, named for
the French physician who first
described the symptoms in
1882, is an inborn metabolic
disorder. Patients born with
the disease cannot produce an
enzyme, glucocerebrosidase,
which helps break down
a specific complex lipid,
glucocerebroside. If the body
cannot break down this lipid,
it builds up in body tissues,
including the spleen, liver, bone
marrow, lymphatic system,
lungs, skin, eyes, kidneys, heart
and nervous system.
For a person to develop the
disease, they must inherit an
abnormal gene from each
parent. Gaucher disease affects
about one in every 40,000-
60,000 people worldwide. The
disease is especially common
in those of Ashkenazi (Eastern
and Central European) Jewish
ancestry, where it affects one in
every 450-1,000 people.
Not all people with Gaucher
disease display the same
symptoms. In fact, there are
three types of Gaucher disease.
Type 1 Gaucher disease is

the most common form of the
disorder. Patients may develop
skeletal abnormalities, enlarged
spleens, extreme fatigue,
anemia and nosebleeds. Some
patients are diagnosed as
children, while others don’t
develop symptoms until age 50
or 60.
Type 2 Gaucher disease
afflicts children. Unlike type 1,
it causes severe neurological
symptoms and usually leads to
death within the first three years
of life.
Type 3 Gaucher disease
usually begins in childhood
or adolescence. While it does
cause neurological problems,
they are typically not as severe
as those caused by type 2, and
the symptoms develop more
gradually.
Gaucher disease can be
diagnosed through genetic
testing or a blood test that
evaluates a specific enzyme
level. Most people from
vulnerable populations often
get tested to see if they carry
the abnormal gene, which could
be passed on to their children.
If someone is diagnosed with
Gaucher disease, enzyme
replacement therapy (ERT) is
highly effective in most patients
with type 1, and treats some of
the symptoms of type 3. ERT
decreases liver and spleen size,
reduces skeletal anomalies,
and successfully reverses other
debilitating symptoms of the
disorder, including abnormal
blood counts and fatigue.

has your cat come to wake you
up by rubbing his face against
your face in the morning? Your
cat looks adorable, but the odor
coming from his mouth may
make his affection less than
welcome. Of course, you want
to freshen your cat’s breath,
but before you look into kitty
breath mints, you might want to
make an appointment with your
veterinarian.
While post-tuna halitosis is
no cause for concern, your
cat’s breath should not stink
consistently. If you notice an
unrelenting odor, your cat
might be suffering from an
undetected health issue, such
as oral disease or diabetes. If
you notice the following smells,
have your cat examined by a
vet:
* A sweet smell. If you cat’s
breath smells fruity, it could be
a sign of diabetes, especially if
the sweet breath is combined
with excessive thirst, frequent
urination and weight loss.
* An ammonia-like smell. If your
cat’s breath smells like urine,
he could have kidney disease.
Other symptoms include loss
of appetite, thirst and frequent
urination.
* A bile-like smell. If your cat’s
breath smells like vomit, he
may have liver problems. Look
for other symptoms, including
a swollen belly, loss of appetite
and jaundice, or a yellow
discoloration in your cat’s eyes
and gums.
* A smell similar to bad breath
smell in humans. If your cat’s
breath smells like human
morning breath, it might have
gum disease, the most common
cause of halitosis.
Gum disease is caused by
destructive bacteria, which
can build plaque and infect the
gum line. Professional tooth
cleanings can help control the
problem, but cats (and noses)
benefit greatly from weekly
tooth brushing.
If your cat won’t allow you to
brush its teeth, try using an oral
care probiotic such as Teddy’s

Ferris’ Club Hockey team and Big Rapids High
School’s team to a game of hockey, sled hockey style

Dogs consists of players with a variety of disabilities
ranging from amputees, spina bifida, muscular
dystrophy, cerebral palsy and spinal cord injuries.
October is disability Awareness Month. Admission
is $1 or two non-perishable food items. Proceeds
will go toward a book scholarship for students with
disabilities. Food items collected will be donated to

Red Flannel Festival
A Piece of Cedar Springs Heritage
It all began in 1936 in the midst of “the worst winter in years.” The whole country suffered in the grip of heavy show and sub-zero temperatures. A New York feature writer bemoaned
the “fact” that, “Here we are in the midst of an old-fashioned winter and there are no red flannels in the USA to go with it.”
The local newspaper, The Cedar Springs Clipper, owned and edited by “The Clipper Gals” Nina Babcock and Grace Hamilton answered the writer with a RED HOT editorial stating,
“Just because Sak’s Fifth Avenue does not carry red flannels, it doesn’t follow that no one in the country does. CEDAR SPRINGS’ merchants have red flannels!”
The story was picked up by The Associated Press and orders began pouring in from all over the USA.
Jack Pollock and his wife Ann, owners of Pollock’s Store in downtown Cedar Springs, had a large stock of Red Flannels. They were tireless supporters of the early Red Flannel Festivals
and “drop seaters.”
Seeing the possibility of at least a few years of publicity because of our famous “drop seaters” and lumbering history, a “RED FLANNEL DAY” was planned for the fall of 1939. The
love, pride and support of the community has kept the rich tradition alive! It has continued to be an annual event, held the last weekend in September and the first weekend in
October for the 71st YEAR, making it the 15th oldest festival in the State of Michigan!
