THE TEACHING

PROFESSION
Introduction

YOU , THE TEACHER, AS A PERSON IN SOCIETY

-by Brenda B. Corpuz,Ph.D

” Teachers…are the most responsible and important member of society because their professional efforts
affect the fate of the earth.”- Helen Caldicott

In this chapter, we will be made to realize the significant role that will play in the society. This is perhaps
one reason why many a time the teachers is blamed for the many ills in the society.Wou will also come
to realize the demands it will exact from us for much is expected of us, the teacher.

As stated there that ,We don’t live in a vacuum. We live in the society. We are part of society. Our
society influences us to the extent that we allow ourselves to be influenced by it. Our thought, values,
and action are somehow shaped by events and by the people with whom we come in contact. We in
turn, help shape society- its events, its people and its destiny.

Another quoted saying stated there that” No Man Is an Island”, Yes It is True!!!

No man stands alone….We need one another.. In the context of a life as a teacher, we would say No
Teacher is an Island.

No teachers stands alone…Indeed you can’t become a teacher alone.Think of the many people who are
helping us become a teacher in the near future. In fact, soon we will be called ” teachers” in a relation to
a student, in the same manner that our become student will be called ” student” in a relation to us as
teacher.

As a furure teacher, we have a significant role to play in society. Your influence on your students and on
other people with whom you work and live depends a great deal on your philosophy as a person and as
a teacher. our philosophy of life and your philosophy of education serve as your “window” to the world
and “compass” in the sea of life.

This chapter contains lessons such:

Lesson 1 YOUR PHILOSOPHICAL HERITAGE

“To Philosophize is so essentially human- and in a sense to philospphie means living a truly human life.”-
J. Pieper

We are heirs to a rich philosophical heritage. Pased on to us are a number of philosophies of variuous
thinkers who lived before us. These thinkers reflected on life in this planet. They occupied themselves
searching for answers to questions about human existence.
Meaning,as we are a future teachers we must have and know the different educational philosophies for
us to be able to identify in which will we belong and become our guide in molding learners into a better
citizen in the future. It is also important to know the different implications of our philosophy to the
teaching-learning process.

Lesson 2 FORMULATING YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

” Philiosophy is vital only when yhe questions are mine and so is the struggle towards answers.”- w.
Luijpen

Our philosophy of education is our “window” to the world and ” compass” in life.

With this it is our responsible to have and formulate our own philosophy of education,in which is
reflected in our dealing with our becoming students, colleagues, parent and administrators. Because our
attitude towards problems and life as a whole has a underlying philosophy.

Lesson 3 THE FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES OF MORALITY AND YOU

“When you carry out acts of kindness you get a wonderful feeling inside. It is a though something inside
your body responds and says, yes, this is how I ought to feel.- Unknown

In this lesson, it disscusses about MORALITY in which refers to ” the quality of human acts by which we
call them rigth or wrong, good or evil.”

Meaning we are human , and we are capable of thinking, judging and reasoning. We have our free wills
in ability to choose of our action whether it is for good or bad.It is based on how we are mold from the
very beginning , that is why it is our foundation on how we future teacher will molded our become
students to do and choose the good.

Because we are future teachers needs and posses a good moral character. We are the model of
our students. We expected to be a person of good moral,of human, loving, virtous and mature character.

Lesson 4 VALUES FORMATION AND YOU

” Education in values means the cultivation of affectivity , leading the educand through exposure to an
experience of value and of the valuable.” – R. Aquino

This lesson on values formation is anchored on the belief in trancendent values, meaning they
remain unchanged. It also premised on the principle that the values are both TAUGHTand CAUGHT,

Our Value Formation in essence is a training of the intellect and will../this includes training the intellect
in its power to form ideas, judge and reason out and training the will to be strong to desire and act on
that which is good.

In shorth Values Formation is essential for us as a future teacher, because is is integral part of our life.

Lesson 5 TEACHING AS YOUR VOCATION MISSION AND PROFESSION

” One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to touch our human
feelings.”- Carl Jun

Teaching is a VOCATION, for it is a calling from God worthy of our response.

Teaching is a MISSION defined mission as a ” task assigned”.

Teaching is also a PROFESSION , the way of rendering service to humanity.

This makes me familiar on what is their differences.
