Comparing means of 2 groups

a. The research question to be addressed.

Is there exist a significant different in English test score between gender in SMK Datuk
Menteri.

b. The hypothesis to be tested

H0 : There is no different in English test score between male and female students in SMK
Datuk Menteri.
H1 : There is different in English test score between male and female students in SMK
Datuk Menteri.

c. Brief description of instrument used to gather your data.

Data was collected from the final English exam. The exam paper is the standardize from
Jabatan Pelajaran Negeri Johor.

d. Brief description of the relevant research design.

This is not an experimental research design, but it is an exploratory research. The
researcher wants to find out the status quo of the performance between genders.

e. Data in SPSS format (with sufficient description-you may use screen capture to show the
data structure and data content).

f. The necessary investigation (or analyses) to check that all required assumptions are
met (with respect to test employed)

To answer this research question, I need to analyses the data according to hypothesis. Our
data is test score, continues data and we can compute mean then compare mean. The
suitable analysis is independent t-test. Before we perform the test, we need to full fill
three conditions:

i. Each group with minimum of 30 data.

ii. Data must be continuing data.
iii. Data must be normal distributed.

We already full fill condition i and ii. So, we need to performed test for normality.

Tests of Normality

Kolmogorov-Smirnova Shapiro-Wilk

Statistic df Sig. Statistic df Sig.

Final exam .124 62 .020 .954 62 .021

a. Lilliefors Significance Correction

When we test normality of the data using Shapiro-Wilk, the result shows the data not
normal. So we continue our test using non parametric test. As a conclusion, we proceed
our test using Mann Whitney U Test.

The Mann Whitney U Test is a non-parametric test that can be used in place of an
unpaired t-test. It is used to determine whether the means of two populations are equal.

h. Interpretation of result/output

The analysis shows that Asyptote Significant is 0.425 (p>0.05).We do not reject the null
hypothesis.

We can conclude that, at α=0.05 level of significance there is enough evidence to

conclude that there is no difference in English final test score between male and female
student.
