Reservoir Engineering II (PDB3023) Assignment

Application of Material Balance Equation

1. Using the Havlena and Odeh method, show how material balance can be used to determine
initial oil-in-place in a volumetric reservoir with solution gas drive and known water influx.
PVT and production data are available.

2. Volumetric calculations indicate that a volumetric undersaturated reservoir contains 270.6

MMSTB of oil initially in place. The initial reservoir pressure is 3685 psi. The following
additional reservoir data are available:

Swi = 24%, cw = 3.62 × 10−6 psi−1, cf = 4.95 × 10−6 psi−1, Bw = 1.0 bbl/STB, pb = 1500 psi

Production and PVT data are given below:

Volumetric Bo Np Wp
Average RB/STB MSTB MSTB
Pressure
3685 1.1302 0 -
3680 1.3104 20.48 -
3676 1.3104 34.75 -
3667 1.3105 78.56 -
3664 1.3105 101.85 -
3640 1.3109 215.68 -
3605 1.3116 364.61 -
3567 1.3122 542.99 0.159
3515 1.3128 841.59 0.805
3448 1.3130 1273.53 2.579
3360 1.3150 1691.89 5.008
3275 1.3160 2127.08 6.500
3188 1.3170 2575.33 8.000

Calculate the initial oil-in-place by using the MBE and compare with the volumetric
estimate of N.

3. A volumetric method estimates a reservoir to contain approximately 14.5 MMSTB

original-oil-in place. The reservoir is at the initial pressure, just saturated but no gas cap.

Application of Material Balance Equation
The table below gives PVT and production data for the reservoir. There has been no water
production.

PVT and production data

a. Calculate the water influx at cumulative oil production of 1.715 MMSTB and 3.430
MMSTB.
b. Determine the cumulative production when the reservoir pressure is declined to
1000 psia.

4. A reservoir may be considered as a right cone with dimensions 750 ft from apex to oil-
water contact, and a base radius of 3 miles at the oil-water contact. Estimated values of
porosity and water saturation are 0.17 and 0.24 respectively. The oil-water contact is found
at 4260 ft subsea, and a fully shut-in pressure of 1919 psi was measured at this depth, the
initial average reservoir pressure at reservoir datum being taken as 1850 psi. Given the
following PVT and production data, estimate the cumulative production obtainable by the
fall in average reservoir pressure to 1000 psi.

5. A reservoir is believed to contain an initial oil in place of 300 MMSTB and has an initial
gas cap of 120.7 MMMSCF. The initial pressure at the gas-oil contact, which is also a
convenient datum, is 5000 psi. The PVT properties of the system at reservoir conditions
are as follows:

PVT Data

The uniform initial water saturation is 30% and water and pore volume compressibilities are
each 3x10-6psi-1. Production started on January 1, 2018 and a constant oil production of 60 000
STB/day has been maintained. Water injection started at a constant rate of 70,000 STB/day on
January 1, 2019. Assume Bw, for injected water is 1.00 RB/STB. The cumulative gas and
reservoir production pressure has been reported as follows:

Gp P(psi)
January 1, 2018 12.045 MMMSCF 4300
January 1, 2019 26.280 MMMSCF 4250

Estimate the cumulative water influx from the surrounding aquifer on January 1, 2018 and
January 1, 2019.
