ABSTRACT
In recent decades it has been observed how the burnout syndrome has become an
international psychosocial phenomenon and the focus of increasing interest not only for the
scientific community but also for the general public. Gradually, work- as well as
physical/mental health concerned disciplines have become committed to its study; not an
easy task given the ambiguity of the concept. Here a brief review of burnout is presented,
including its definition, symptoms, diagnosis and proposed treatments. It is still under debate
whether burnout can be considered an illness or syndrome differentiated from other mental
disorders or if it is just another symptom. How burnout is conceptualized determines the
means and instruments for its study, detection/diagnosis and assistance/treatment. Although
literature regarding burnout is vast, the lack of consensus in its definition is, undeniably, the
main obstacle for its study at both, theoretical and empirical level. In order to promote a
humanistic spirit in health services
it is necessary to implement institutional and individual strategies for prevention and
ntervention.
