Group Time Evaluation

1. Dickens Elementary School

a. (702)

b. Mrs. Borner

c. Kindergarten; ages 4-5

2. 9am-11am

3. 1 adult working with 20 children

4. Activity

a. The activity done as a class was an “-ack” words activity. First the children watched a

video that showed different words that ended in “-ack” along with pictures to go along

with it. After watching the video, Mrs. Borner asked the class to come up with more

words they could think of that ended in “-ack”, and she chose whoever raised their hands

to say them to the class.

5. Appropriateness

a. This activity was appropriate because the children were learning new words by first

hearing the word, seeing it, and then saying out loud. This is beneficial to visual and

audio learner. I think that hearing, seeing, then saying the word helps the children

memorize it more.

6. Time

a. 10 min

7. Space

a. The space used for group time had appropriate spacing because the carpet had single

squares for each child so they weren’t too close to each other but also not to spread out to

where it was hard to hear or see what the teacher was going over.
8. The children were brought together on an alphabet carpet for the activity. On the carpet, each

letter was in a square big enough for each child to sit in one.

9. Actively vs passively involved

a. During this activity I felt like the students were 100% actively involved. While watching

the video, they all repeated the words that were being shown and followed along very

well.

10. Children reaction

a. To me, it appeared the children really enjoyed this activity. They were all happy to follow

along with the video and eager to think of more words that ended in (-ack).

11. Flexibility

a. While conducting the group time, Mrs. Borner just made sure that all the students were

paying attention. The was flexible in being able to conduct that group time while also

preparing for the next activity.

12. Individualizations

a. I did not notice any individualizations/accommodations.

13. Gender

a. During the group time the boys were more talkative. A few different boys would get side

tracked and talk who whoever was next to them.

14. Inappropriate behaviors

a. The only inappropriate behaviors I noticed was some students just shouting out instead of

raising their hands. Mrs. Borner would only call on students who raise their hands and

acknowledge those answers so that the other children would know to raise their hands

first.

15. Ending group time

a. The teacher ended the group time by asking the students if they could think of anymore

words that ended in (-ack) before moving on to the next activity. This gave them time to
finish up their thoughts on the activity they were on while also preparing to move on to

the next one.

16. Activity following group time

a. The activity that followed the (-ack) word activity was another group activity in the same

carpet area that the children were already at. I feel like during this activity the students

were more distracted because they had been in the same spot for a long amount of time.

So, I don’t think it was an appropriate time to do the second group activity.

17. Evaluation

a. Overall, I think that this activity was appropriate and effective. It engaged the children

and it wasn’t too long or too short. If the activity had been longer, it would have lost the

children’s attention.
