Course Description
This course is designed for students who have completed Chinese 2005 and 2006, or
for students whose Chinese is at native or near native levels. Even if you read, write
and speak Chinese very well, you can still take this course for refinement and better
cultivation. At this level, more advanced grammar and rhetorical methods are
taught and article-level compositions are practiced. Students are taught how to
deal effectively with more advanced topics including argumentation, persuasion,
negotiation and reasoning in Chinese. Students will have opportunities to read
famous historical and romantic narratives, as well as poems and allegories. Video-
and audio-tapes of Chinese movies and cultures will be used. Students who have
successfully completed this course will be considered well-educated and highly
proficient in Chinese.

Learning Goals
• To advance the four language skills: comprehension, speaking, reading and
writing along an introduction to important aspects of the Chinese-speaking
cultures
• To foster and enhance the knowledge of essential structures and vocabulary
• To develop and enhance the methods of communication in real-life situations
• To develop students’ abilities to participate in interpersonal, interpretive, and
presentational communication
• To foster a better understanding and appreciation of cultural products and
practices and to develop their capacity to reflect on the perspectives that
underlie these products
• To enhance knowledge and new perspectives of the Chinese language
• To foster students’ capacity to take the language beyond the classroom in real-
world interactions with native and heritage speakers

Academic Integrity
The Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature fully supports
Baruch College's policy on Academic Honesty, which states, in part: "Academic
dishonesty is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Cheating, forgery, plagiarism
and collusion in dishonest acts undermine the college's educational mission and the
students' personal and intellectual growth. Baruch students are expected to bear
individual responsibility for their work and to uphold the ideal of academic integrity.
Any student who attempts to compromise or devalue the academic process will be
sanctioned." Please note that a report of suspected academic dishonesty will be sent
to the Dean of Students office.

Ground Rules
1. Students must arrive to class on time and sign in. One absence will cost a
student 2 points. One lateness will cost 1 point.
2. Absences can be excused only for religious reasons or by presentation of a
note from your doctor stating a valid medical cause. Alternatively, in
exceptional circumstances, the student can provide the professor with
compelling reasons for necessary absence in advanced writing.
3. At the beginning of each class, the professor will conduct a roll call. If a
student is late at that moment, the student will be first marked as absent. It
is the student’s responsibility to report to the professor on his or her
attendance with lateness. Otherwise, the absence mark will become
permanent.
4. If you are tardy more than three times, the instructor will no longer be
responsible for including you in drills or answering your questions regarding
missed lessons in class.
5. No make-ups will be given for tests or quizzes. If you are ill with a note from
your doctor or observing a religious holidays, you will be excused from test
or quiz. The grade for the excused test or quiz will be assigned based on your
average result from other assessments.
6. Once class begins, you will not be able to get up, so please take care of all
business ahead of time (telephone calls, restroom, etc.)
7. Read and follow all the rules and requirements published by Baruch College
concerning this course, including if this course is linked to another class.
