3 DEFINITIONS

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions and those
given in SASO ISO 4618 standard in clause 2/1.
3.1 Base Component: The component of the paint consisting of epoxy resin,
pigments and suitable additives.
3.2 Hardener Component: The hardener shall consist of a blend of Polyamide or
polyamine resins.
3.3 Pigments
Any suitable pigment and extender may be used, provided the resulting
product conforms to the requirements of this standard.
3.4 Vehicle
The vehicle shall consist of an epoxy resin and suitable curing agent which is
solvent free.

4. REQUIREMENTS

The following requirements shall be fulfilled of Coating

4.1 Condition in Container
The paint shall show no settling or caking and shall be incorporated to a
smooth homogeneous state after stirring .
4.2 Consistency
The paint should be in such a condition that stirring, after the addition of
hardener to the base paint, readily produces a uniform mixture of good
consistency and should be able to apply as per manufacturer recommendation.

4.3 Application Properties

The paint shall have satisfactory application properties or in accordance with
the manufacturer’s recommendations. and shall give a film free from any
surface defects.

SAUDI STANDARD SASO ........./2017

4.4 Non-Volatile Content

The non-volatile content shall not be less than 99 % of the total mass of
the combined (Base + Hardener) paint When tested in accordance with clause
2.4
4.5 Volatile Organic compounds:

The paint shall not contain any organic volatile compounds. When tested in
accordance with clause 2.5 and 2.6

4.6 Color
The color of the paint shall be close to the reference color when tested as per clause
no. 2.7
4.7 Drying Time
The paint when applied at (23±2)°C and at a relative humidity (50±5 %)
shall have the following drying properties.
• Surface dry — 6 hours (max).
• Recoating interval — 8 hours to 72 hours.
• Full cure time — 7 days (max). When tested in accordance with clause
2.7
4.8 Lead Content
The lead content shall not exceed 0.009% of the total mass of the paint when
tested in accordance with clause No 2.12.

4.9 Gloss
The gloss degree of the paint will as follows:
• High Gloss more than 70%
• Semi-Gloss 45-60% When tested in accordance with clause 2.8

weight solution of sodium hydroxide. Place the panels in the containers to allow
exposure to both the liquid and vapor phases of the fluids. If multiple panels are
placed in the same container, allow at least (25 mm) between panels. Cover, but
do not seal, and allow to stand at (24° ± 1°C) for 30 days, maintaining liquid levels
as required. Remove panels, rinse, and allow to dry for 24 hr. Any blistering,
peeling, or disbandment shall constitute failure to pass the test.

CS-17 Wheel, 1 Kg load and 1000 cycles. When tested in accordance with clause
2.11
4.15 Extraction of metals
the product shall be deemed suitable for contact with water intended for human
consumption if the amounts of the specified metals in the final extracts do not
exceed the specified limits given in Table 1. When tested in accordance with BS
6920-2.6.
metal detected in the aqueous extracts from the product must be at a concentration
less than the Maximum Admissible Concentration (MAC) as given in BS 6920
Part 1.. The test is carried out on duplicate test samples and both test samples must
comply with the specification.
