Standard 1. Translate numbers from non-Hindu-Arabic systems into decimal

form and back [this means convert Mayan and Egyptian to base 10 and back]
1. Convert these two numbers into decimal form.

This is a 16 in the 400s place, 16*400 = 6400

This is a 11 in the 20s place, 11*20 = 220

This is a 6 in the 1s place, 1*6 = 6.

Total is 6626.

There are 7 tens and 5 ones, total

is 75.

2. Convert the number 450,000 (base 10) into Mayan or Egyptian

(your choice)

For Mayan, we first convert to base 20. The correct conversion is

[2:16:5:0:0]

Base values: 160000s 8000s 400s 20s

1s

160000*2 = 320000

16*8000 = 128000

5*4000 = 2000

These add to 450000.

The Mayan digits are:

For Egyptian, you need 4 tadpoles and 5 pointing fingers.

Standard 2. Perform operations on numbers in alternate bases

1. Consider the addition problem, 132 + 424.

a. Do this problem as if the numbers are in base 5.

[1:3:2]+[4:2:4] = [1+4 : 3+2 : 4+2] = [5:5:6] and now

every quantity of 5 carries a 1 to the next place: =
[5:6:1] = [6:1:1] = [1:1:1:1]

The final answer can also be written as 1111 (base 5)

b. Then do the problem as if the numbers are in base 8.

The digits add to the 556 again, but this is a valid answer in
Concept Quiz # 2 Name:_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

base 8. 132+424 = 556 (base 8)

c. What was different about these two problems (besides "the

base")?

When you complete the problem in base 8, you don’t have to

carry over to a higher digit to write the final answer. In (a) we
had to do 3 carries.

2. Now try the problem 201 – 102 in the following bases.

a. Base 3. Set up a base 3 chart and carry 3s until you

can subtract.

9s 3s 1s 9s 3s 1s 9s 3s 1s

2 0 1 = 1 3 1 = 1 2 4

-1 0 2 -1 0 2 -1 0 2

? ? 2 2

This shows that 201 – 102 = 22 (base 3).

b. Base 5. We’ll do the same thing, except using a base 5

chart.

25s 5s 1s 25s 5s 1s 25s 5s 1s

2 0 1 = 1 5 1 = 1 4 6

-1 0 2 -1 0 2 -1 0 2

? ? 4 4

This shows that 201 – 102 = 44 (base 5)

c. Base 10. Same as it ever was.

100s 10s 1s 100s 10s 1s 100s 10s 1s

2 0 1 = 1 10 1 = 1 9 11

-1 0 2 -1 0 2 -1 0 2

? ? 9 9

This shows that 201 – 102 = 99

Standard 3. Determine patterns in a sequence of numbers by performing

operations on successive pairs
CHOOSE ONE OPTION!
OPTION 1. Create a times table for base 8. Explain, in detail and using
sentences, all of the patterns you see in the table.

X 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 10

1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 10

2 2 4 6 10 12 14 16 20

3 3 6 11 14 17 22 25 30

4 4 10 14 20 24 30 34 40

5 5 12 17 24 31 36 43 50

6 6 14 22 30 36 44 52 60

7 7 16 25 34 43 52 61 70

10 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 100

There are many patterns, such as

• Draw a line from the top left ‘X’ diagonally down and right to
100. This forms a line of reflection. The reason this happens is
that multiplication (in any base) is commutative, meaning for
example that 3*7 = 7*3 in any base.

• 1 times any number is that number

• The 2 row goes up by 2s, skipping the 8 digit because we’re in

base 8.

• The last digit in the 4 row goes in the pattern of 0, 4, 0, 4, etc

(like the 5 pattern in base 10)

• In the 7 row, the digits increase/decrease by 1 and always add to

7.

• And so much more!

OPTION 2. Complete this pattern, and justify your answer.

Translating the numbers will give the sequence 200, 196, 188, 172,
and 140.

Taking differences reveals a pattern:

200 – 196 = 4

196 – 188 = 8

188 – 172 = 16

172 – 140 = 32

These differences are successive powers of 2, so the next difference

should be 64. Then the next number has to be 140 – 64 = 76.

In Egyptian, the symbols will be ∩∩∩∩∩∩∩

Standard 4. Change numbers from base 10 to a different base, and vice-versa

1. Convert 2012 (base 10) into a base 5 number.

625s 125s 25s 5s 1s

3 1 0 2 2
3*625 = 1*125 = 2*5 = 10 2*1 = 2 Check:
1875 125 12 still 1875 +
Concept Quiz # 2 Name:_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

remains 12 – 10 = 125 + 10
2012 137 2 +2=
–1875 – 125 2012.
137 12
The final answer can be written as [3:1:0:2:2] (base 5), or just
31022 (base 5)

2. Convert 1000 (base 8) into a base 10 number.

First figure out the value of 1000 (base 8): the fourth place value in
base 8 is worth 83 = 512. There is only one digit in the fourth place,
and no other digits, so the final answer states that 1000 (base 8) =
512 (base 10).
3. Convert [14: 0: 12] (base 20) into a base 60 number.

400s 20s 1s 3600s 60s 1s

14 0 12 1 33 32

14*400 0 12 Total 1*3600 33*60 = 32*1 =

= 5600 value: = 3600 1980 32

5612
(base
10)

The total value (calculated in base 10) for each set of digits is equal
to 5612. This proves that [14:0:12] (base 20) = [1:33:32] (base 60)

4. Convert 999 (base 10) into a base 4 number.

256s 64s 16s 4s 1s

3 3 2 1 3

3*256 = 3*64 = 2*16 = 32 1*4 = 4 3*1 = 3

768 192
39 – 32 = 7–4=3 3–3=0
999 – 768 231 – 192 7
= 231 = 39

Check: 768 + 192 + 32 + 4 + 3 = 999 in base 10 arithmetic.

Therefore the final answer is that 999 (base 10) = 33213 (base 4).
