Lesson Idea Name: Exponential Equations & Inequalities

Content Area: Algebra II

Grade Level(s): 11th

Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE9-12.A.SSE.3 Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain
properties of the quantity represented by the expression.

MGSE9-12.F.IF.8 Write a function defined by an expression in different but equivalent forms to reveal
and explain different properties of the function. Your state standards align with your lesson objectives
and relate to the curriculum for the grade level.

Technology Standard Addressed: Empowered Learner Students leverage technology to take an active
role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the
learning sciences. Students:

A. Articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve
them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.

C. Use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate
their learning in a variety of ways.

D. Understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to

choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and can transfer their knowledge to explore
emerging technologies.

Selected Technology Tool: PowerPoint

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): N/A.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☒ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): As we know Universal for design is a framework that serves to
allow all students to access the curriculum regardless of their areas of need. In this instance, I feel
that we serve Universal Design by allowing the students to narrate their PowerPoints. Students
showcase their creativity while ensuring that all students can receive the appropriate information.

Lesson idea implementation:
Students will be able to produce equivalent forms of exponential equations and inequalities. Students
will be able to make connections and engage with prior knowledge from previous lessons and
information learned last semester about exponents. (Students used a graphic organizer to learn
exponentials and their roots). Students will use this knowledge to express equivalent forms of
exponential functions (i.e. converting 1/8th to “two raised to the second”). In doing so, students will
understand that the number “1” over another number implies that the exponential figure is negative.

Students will be assessed based on their presentation. After completing the following objectives listed
above. Students will be asked to create 5 slide PowerPoint and provide 5 problems and share with the
class a diagram that illustrates the formula’s we have gone over. Students who showcase mastery on
a formative assessment given as an Exit Ticket will be responsible for showcasing 7 total problems and
writing a brief synopsis on their PowerPoint.

Students will be given an exit ticket at the end of the lesson which will ask what they feel they still need more
feedback on. These exits will be looked at during the break and incorporated in to the second lesson during
instruction.

Reflective Practice: As I reflect on my lesson on thing that I enjoy is providing students with the
opportunity to create their own piece of work. As a mathematics teacher one resource that I love to
make use of is PowerPoint. Again, it places emphasis on the ideals of creativity and individuality. In
addition, it allows students to narrate their presentation for others and allow other students to have a
direct view of how other students solve given problems.
