Riverscape Spring 2018

New Riverside Sanctuary

We are thrilled to announce that late
last year, we received a remarkable
donation of 107 acres of riverside land
from long-time members, Gorham
and Robin Nicol. This new Greenway
property, known as The Nicol Sanctuary,
is located approximately 10 miles
downstream of Willamette Mission Sate
Park in Yamhill County.

Our aim is to enhance this critical

floodplain habitat to further benefit
river health, and to provide low impact
recreation for Water Trail users.
Restoration and stewardship efforts are
already underway, as we have begun to
remove invasive weeds which dominate While we are not a land trust, and do not an abundance of habitat, and also the

“187 Miles of Wonder” Art Print

We are happy to share that we have commissioned the design
of a gorgeous poster to honor and celebrate the Willamette
River. Portland based artist, Chris Marron, created this image
in the iconic style of the Works Project Administration (WPA).

Part of FDR’s New Deal, the WPA hired millions of workers,

including artists who designed thousands of posters.
Some of the best known posters of this era depicted our
National Parks, with the intention of inspiring travel to these
magnificent landscapes.

It is in this light that we felt this unique style would be fitting

for our home river and Oregon’s only National Water Trail.

We hope that this print will continue to remind people of the

“187 miles of wonder” we have flowing through the heart of
the Willamette Valley.

Visit www.willametteriverkeeper.org for information on how

to order this unique print, as well size and framing options
with our friends at Art Heads. Proceeds from this print will
help support our work on the Willamette River Greenway and
Water Trail.

As you can see, our poster was inspired from actual

Willamette River scenes!

River Guardians:
Strengthening Whole Communities Through Clean Water
Looking back from its beginnings in 2015 as a simple monthly
river clean up in the Eugene-Springfield and Portland
metro areas, River Guardians (RG) has evolved from “Trashy
Tuesdays,” to include regular monitoring and community
engagement programs touching on complex issues in social
and environmental justice.

In Eugene, RG has added focused river clean up and education

programs specifically tailored for student groups, employee
outings and organizations involved with homeless advocacy
and life transitions programs, such as Eugene Mission’s Life
Changes Program.

River Guardians with rafts, safety gear, and sometimes
transportation and trained raft guides, to help ensure a safe
on-water experience for volunteers unfamiliar with river
recreation. Program Supervisor, Zane Wheeler, agrees with
Kelsey. He believes River Guardians efforts have provided

Floodplain Restoration on a Landscape-scale

Our restoration program is continuing to
