Revision Paper C

1.

Your vessel is to proceed from Santos (Brazil) to Cape Town (South Africa).

The chosen route from Ocean Passages of the World is by Rhumb line from Santos pilot
station to Santos departure point and then by Great Circle to Cape Town Pilot station.

Santos Pilot 24° 00’ S 046° 18’W

Santos (Departure Point) 24° 12’ S 046° 00’W
Cape Town Pilot 33° 54’ S 018° 24’ E

Calculate:-

i) The course and distance to Santos departure waypoint.

ii) The initial course and distance from Santos departure point to Cape Town pilot by great
circle.
iii) The latitude where GC track crosses 020° W.

2.

In Ocean Passages for the World, outline the reasons why different routes are stated for:

● East or West bound vessels

● High or Low powered vessels
● Time of the year

3.

On 12th June at 1900GMT a vessel was in DR position 48° 01’N, 022° 18’E. Course 042°T and
speed 15 knots.

A sight of Venus bearing 250°T gave an intercept of 4.0’ Towards.

At 0400GMT Polaris was observed at a sextant altitude of 49° 58.0’.

Index error 1.2’ off the arc. Height of eye 18.2m.

Find the vessel’s position at 0400GMT.
