Command Prompt Reference

This is a reference to the commands available by default in Windows XP/Windows Server 2003, Windows
Vista/Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7/Windows 2008 R2.

It includes the original Microsoft supplied text, plus additional notes, examples and links to related
commands. Some commands have been merged in to a single page as they do the same thing.

Note: When running a command, if it appears to do something that you are not expecting, press CTRL-C
to stop it.

ASSOC (assoc.asp) Displays or modifies file extension associations.

ATTRIB (attrib.asp) Displays or changes file attributes.
BREAK Sets or clears extended CTRL+C checking. No effect under Windows.
BCDEDIT (bcdedit.asp) Sets properties in boot database to control boot loading.
Displays or modifies access control lists (ACLs) of files. DEPRECIATED - Use
CACLS (cacls.asp)
ICACLS (icacls.asp) instead.
CALL (call.asp) Calls one batch program from another.
CD (cd.asp) Displays the name of or changes the current directory.
CHCP (chcp.asp) Displays or sets the active code page number.
CHDIR (chdir.asp) Displays the name of or changes the current directory. See CD (cd.asp)
CHKDSK (chkdsk.asp) Checks a disk and displays a status report.
CHKNTFS (chkntfs.asp) Displays or modifies the checking of disk at boot time.
CLS (cls.asp) Clears the screen.
CMD (cmd.asp) Starts a new instance of the Windows command interpreter.
COLOR (color.asp) Sets the default console foreground and background colors.
COMP (comp.asp) Compares the contents of two files or sets of files.
Displays or alters the compression of files on NTFS partitions.
CONVERT (convert.asp)Converts FAT volumes to NTFS. You cannot convert the current drive.
COPY (copy.asp) Copies one or more files to another location.
DATE (date.asp) Displays or sets the date.
DEL (del.asp) Deletes one or more files.
DIR (dir.asp) Displays a list of files and subdirectories in a directory.
Compares the contents of two floppy disks.
Copies the contents of one floppy disk to another.
DISKPART Displays or configures Disk Partition properties.

DOSKEY (doskey.asp) Edits command lines, recalls Windows commands, and creates macros.

Displays current device driver status and properties.
ECHO (echo.asp) Displays messages, or turns command echoing on or off.
Ends localization of environment changes in a batch file.
ERASE (erase.asp) Deletes one or more files. See DEL (del.asp)
EXIT (exit.asp) Quits the CMD.EXE program (command interpreter).
FC (fc.asp) Compares two files or sets of files, and displays the differences between them.
FIND (find.asp) Searches for a text string in a file or files.
FINDSTR (findstr.asp) Searches for strings in files.
FOR (for.asp) Runs a specified command for each file in a set of files.
Selects a file (or set of files) and executes a command on that file. This is helpful
FORFILES (forfiles.asp)
for batch jobs.
FORMAT (format.asp) Formats a disk for use with Windows.
FSUTIL (fsutil.asp) Displays or configures the file system properties.
FTYPE (ftype.asp) Displays or modifies file types used in file extension associations.
GOTO (goto.asp) Directs the Windows command interpreter to a labeled line in a batch program.
Displays Group Policy information for machine or user.
GRAFTABL Enables Windows to display an extended character set in graphics mode.
HELP (help.asp) Provides Help information for Windows commands.
ICACLS (icacls.asp) Display, modify, backup, or restore ACLs for files and directories.
IF (if.asp) Performs conditional processing in batch programs.
LABEL (label.asp) Creates, changes, or deletes the volume label of a disk.
MD (md.asp) Creates a directory.
MKDIR (mkdir.asp) Creates a directory. See MD (md.asp)
MKLINK (mklink.asp) Creates Symbolic Links and Hard Links
MODE (mode.asp) Configures a system device.
MORE (more.asp) Displays output one screen at a time.
MOVE (move.asp) Moves one or more files from one directory to another directory.
Displays files opened by remote users for a file share.
PATH (path.asp) Displays or sets a search path for executable files.
PAUSE (pause.asp) Suspends processing of a batch file and displays a message.
POPD (popd.asp) Restores the previous value of the current directory saved by PUSHD.
PRINT (print.asp) Prints a text file.
PROMPT (prompt.asp) Changes the Windows command prompt.
PUSHD (pushd.asp) Saves the current directory then changes it.
RD (rd.asp) Removes a directory.
RECOVER Recovers readable information from a bad or defective disk.
REM (rem.asp) Records comments (remarks) in batch files or CONFIG.SYS.
REN (ren.asp) Renames a file or files.
RENAME (rename.asp) Renames a file or files. See REN (ren.asp)
REPLACE (replace.asp) Replaces files.

RMDIR (rmdir.asp) Removes a directory. See RD (rd.asp).

Advanced utility to copy files and directory trees
SC (sc.asp) Displays or configures services (background processes).
Schedules commands and programs to run on a computer.
SET (set.asp) Displays, sets, or removes Windows environment variables.
Begins localization of environment changes in a batch file.
Scans the integrity of all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions
SFC (sfc.asp)
with correct Microsoft versions
SHIFT (shift.asp) Shifts the position of replaceable parameters in batch files.
Allows proper local or remote shutdown of machine.
SORT (sort.asp) Sorts input.
START (start.asp) Starts a separate window to run a specified program or command.
SUBST (subst.asp) Associates a path with a drive letter.
Displays machine specific properties and configuration.
TASKLIST (tasklist.asp) Displays all currently running tasks including services.
TASKKILL (taskkill.asp) Kill or stop a running process or application.
TIME (time.asp) Displays or sets the system time.
TITLE (title.asp) Sets the window title for a CMD.EXE session.
TREE (tree.asp) Graphically displays the directory structure of a drive or path.
TYPE (type.asp) Displays the contents of a text file.
VER Displays the Windows version.
VERIFY (verify.asp) Tells Windows whether to verify that your files are written correctly to a disk.
VOL (vol.asp) Displays a disk volume label and serial number.
XCOPY (xcopy.asp) Copies files and directory trees.
WMIC (wmic.asp) Displays WMI information inside interactive command shell.
