In fact, itis not only a significant theological event in the history of Judaism and Christianity, afterwards, but mainly a cultural fact of great im- portance for the encounter, and the interaction between the two civi- lizations: the Judaic and the Greek. A preeminently crucial encoun- ter that opened up new perspectives to the human mind, and con- tributed decisively, over the centuries, to the formation of the inno- vative philosophical meditation. However, in our exploration of the SEPTUAGINT, more regard should be paid to the reasons for which this colossal work had been undertaken on behalf of the Royal Library of Alexandria. Whom dogs it aspire to initiate into the letter and the spirit of the Judaic Law? And how did this need for the expansion of an ideology, in the Greek language, diametrically opposed to the an- cient Greek world concept, arise? How did the rigor of the Judaic Law start unexpectedly —concerning the poetic quality of the Greek vision- this unique play of the universe, which is the essence of the Greek perception of the Divine and worldly affairs? At least it seems odd to think that the Hellenistic era had some particular reasons to get acquainted with or even more to espouse the Judaic Law. The very opposite! The austerity of the Judaic Law certainly did not suit it, since the Hellenistic era was sel{-sufficing in its world perception: the play of the ancient gods continued being played in the world. It went on forming the world in its own image and, assuredly, no need was arising for some other image to deter- mine the human destiny. All the more so in a historic period in which the enterprise of Alexander the Great made this play even more am- bitious as it intruded into the alien civilizations as a mode of thin- king and attitude, and it enriched the alien wisdom with its unique- ness: the poetics of gods and people. ‘Therefore, the need for the Law to be translated could not have arisen from the ancient Greek world. I mean that the ancient Greeks could not have had any cultural tendency or spiritual curiosity for such a thing. Thus we have no alternative but to tum to the Judaic world and its destiny, in order to explore there the reasons which led Judaism to seek the dissemination of its spiritual «universumm by means of the Greek language. In other words, in order to pursue a heroic outlet from its natural Hebrew language, and to seek a new. adventure in the unfriendly language of another universality: the Greek one. Nowadays, we are used to associating the SEPTUAGINT with the Christian worship. However, at that time, the situation was much different. THE CHALLENGE OF THE DIASPORA ndoubtfully, the more remarkable event in the history of the Hebraic nation since the time of its exile from its homeland has been its Diaspora. Consequently, we are bound to turn to it in our THE SEPTUAGINT TRANSLATION effort to figure out the reasons and the causes accounting for such a state of affairs, so that the release of the Law from its natural lan- guage would be a dire necessity, From the very beginning the Diaspora formed large communities outside Palestine. These communities lived according to their tra tional values, and experienced the world under the requisition of the Law. We must also take into acount that the Law did not forma Canon (the Hebraic Canon was formed quite a lot of centuries later’), but a mode and essence of life, a world concept, but also a consideration of the human destiny. However, the most important thing in this case is that the Diaspora, under the necessity, exposed the Jewish communities to different linguistic traditions and mediums, in contrast to their own, which of course pressupposed a different social, cultural and ideo- logical orientation. This fact is really crucial for the linguistic iden- tity of the Jewish universality within the Diaspora, Since it ous that each world concept is closely associated with its mediums, its essence —above all- is a linguistic essence: the struc- ture of the language forms the kind of the world concept to a great extent, whereas the world concept itself also shapes the linguistic environment in which it develops. Nevertheless, in the case of the Jewish Diaspora, things worked out differently. The Jewish communities outside Palestine gradually forfeited the linguistic mediums of their world perception, In other words, they lost their language little by little; they ceased speaking it. Their natural language switched to the state of a language more or less dead (snoreover, this is exactly what happened in Palestine, where the Hebrew fell into disuse and was replaced by Aramaic). So the Law was hemmed in within this dead language, that is to say the Hebraic style of life was hemmed in. And as it is expected, the deadness of the language was an imminent threat to the Law itself, to the very same Hebraic lifestyle. This suffocating state came to a critical point with the establish- ment of Alexander's world dominion. It is well known that Alexan- der’s policy, as far as the conquered regions and peoples are con- cerned, was the policy of assimilation. By no means did Alexander seek the subjugation in the mode that was prevalent by that time. ‘The very opposite! It was exactly through this independence that Alexander’s policy was aiming at the intellectual assimilation of the defeated peoples in the most possible ways and it was successful to a great extent. In the end, the conqueror's language was established as the lan- guage of the intellectual and social leadership; the language of that class which was defining the cultural structures, and consequently creating ethical values. The peoples did not lose by any means their cultural linguistic background. However, the language was becoming a sort of intellectual suzerain. And this language was the Greek lan- guage, which was the linguistic tool not only of the political author- ity but also of the intellectual elite, if I could word it so. It was the language of philosophy and poetry, the language that was influenc- ing the fortune and the destiny of the human mind. It was the main language of the universality. How could it be then that the preva- lence of this language could not mean simultaneously the predomi- nance of the Greek spirit? Inthe case of the Judaic people something else happened as well. After the foundation of Alexandria, Alexander drifted there from the land of Palestine large groups of Jewish. Yet so big these groups were that the Jewish community in Alexandria constituted an important part of the population of this city and of Egypt in general -particu- larly from the spiritual and social point of view. It has been reported that out of the seven and half million people, which was the popu- lation of Egypt during the reign of the Ptolemies, the one million was Jewish. But Greek had already assimilated these Jewish communi- ties. This language was mainly their spiritual language. So we can figure out the desperate need of the Judaic Law to maintain itself as the supreme essence of the Jewish lifestyle. With its natural language sank into oblivion, under the threat of conquest by the Hellenistic spirit, it was obliged to open up to the new cultural reality, to sup- port itself, even to face a confrontation. It ought to be worded in Greek, not for the Greeks of course -they had a different world per- ception— but primarily for the Jews themselves and their synagogues, where Greek was spoken. It is strikingly impressive the number of Hellenic inscriptions we come across on Jewish tombs and syna- | gogues. This reveals that the Jews at that time, not only in their eve- ryday social interaction, but also in their intellectual pursuits, adopted Greek. It has been remarked that he speaks and writes in Greek as a man having the SEPTUAGINT running in his blood’, THE ENCOUNTER ERTAINLY, THE GREEK TRANSLATIONS OF THE LAW APPEARED IN EGYPT much earlier than the SEPTUAGINT. However, these translations are not reliable at all. They were roughly done under the pressure of the circumstances and the religious needs. Most of the times they paraphrase the text, they distort the letter and the spirit of the Law, and they cause confusion. So as it is natural, the existence and the promulgation of these texts made the undertaking of a reliable trans- lation of the Law an urgent need; a necessity for the survival of the Law. Of course, within the framework of this necessity we should also include the aspiration of the Judaic spirit to confront the Greek ie wish of the Judaic universality to rival the dominating Greek ality, to show off the power of the Law against the poetic fine- ness of the Greek play of the Divine and worldly affairs. Further- more, this latent desire for rivalry always completes the need for survival: it is an indispensable presupposition. Itis the fruitful course for the spiritual encounter of civilizations and their following inter- action. In fact, it is remarkably important to realize that the rendering of the Law in Greek, despite the fact that the seventy-two translators endeavoured to render the Law with the most possible accuracy to the Hebrew original, undoubtfully affected tremendously the Law itself. | mean that the Law, by being rendered in Greek, went through a considerable fertilization: it attained a different dimension both in its letter and spirit. It obtained a poetic style it lacked; or as we could say it was poeticized*. It did not lose its essence, it did not betray its i ‘ss, its God-inspired character and its central importance and lity as Divine Commandment with catholic inviolable power. But Greek, even of the strictest philosophical expression, is a language interwoven with a poetic quality: it is playful and irides- brightly colored and it tinges the things and their mean- the ideas and meditations, poetically. So the Law, by means of its entry into this language, is revealed within its poetic aspect: it manifests a new face, it shatters its seclusion —not only the linguistic THE SEPTUAGINT TRANSEATION one; it does encounter the Greek spirit, as much as it speaks its own Janguage, and therefore the essence of its language: the poetic qual- ity’. 4 ‘This is an event of utmost importance. It contributes decisively to the universal character of the Law. Certainly without this univer- sal character, it would not have been possible for the Law to pen- etrate into the cultural continuum of the Western world. It would not have fertilized the human cogitation, in order to become flesh of the flesh and blood of the blood of the worldwide movement of the hu- man spirit. On the other hand, however, the Law, by means of the SEPTUAGINT, did not attempt to be rendered in a traditional language. ‘That is to say, it was not rendered in the dead language of ancient Greek classicism, despite the powerful attraction it must have held amongst the sacerdotal circles. The very opposite! The whole enter- prise of the translation was supported by the living language of that time: the «common» Greek language. This, in turn, is an event of great significance for the «common» Greek, since this language, through the SEPTUAGINT translation, is upheld at a high level of meditation and world conception. In other words, it becomes the medium for the expression of transcendental values and more than that for the rendering of the God-inspired Word, So, we are to notice a crowning manifestation of the spiritual, linguistic background of the civilizations. As it has already been mentioned, the seventy-two scholars did their best for the most pos- sible faithful rendering of the Law with reference to the Hebrew original. However, this high respect of the translators for the lan- guage of the original did not leave unaffected, by any means, the formation of the «common» Greek language. It has been ascertained that the translated text bears marked characteristics of the linguistic structure of the original: that is to say, it includes numerous Hebraic expressions, which extend in the text and do not form just some odd solutions or inadequacies of expression®. The result brought about by this linguistic peculiarity is the intensity of the tint of the text.
