DIVERSE CURRICULUM 2

Diverse Curriculum

My plan for creating a diverse curriculum that meets the needs of culture, gender, socio-

economic and family structures will be done through many ways, first by creating an emotionally

positive classroom climate. As this setting will help children to feel worthwhile and cared for,

despite their cultural differences. For example, many school districts within the Central Valley

have a good percentage of English Language learners, therefore by labeling different items

throughout the classroom, learning important phrases in the child’s native language, creating

opportunities for success and praising students frequently, as well as, providing supportive

feedback rather than continual correction are just a few ways to create and promote an

emotionally positive climate. Another great way of establishing diverse curriculum is by giving

children a choice when possible in how to present materials or display their knowledge. For

instance, an artistic child might be able to exemplify their knowledge through a diorama instead

of writing a traditional book report.

Another way I would create a diverse curriculum is by emphasizing cooperative learning.

As cooperative learning will assist children of different cultures and give children opportunities

to learn together, and to know each other as learners and as people. In correlation, promoting

positive peer interactions among students in my classroom. This can be done through devoting

class time to developing social skills and role-playing various positive interactions. I will also

make sure to foster perspective taking, in class discussions. By encouraging students to see

issues from multiple perspectives. This process will help enable students to respect and to view

more favorable other points of view, including those of culturally different students.
DIVERSE CURRICULUM 3

I will also familiarize myself with basic cultural differences, as this will help my

understanding of parents personal expectations of their children, as it will help us work together

if classroom rules are different from home rules, and the opportunity to explain the reason for the

differences. Conversations and relationships with parents and family members is something I

highly value, therefore getting to know their views and culture is a big step in establishing those

trustworthy relations.

Another way I will establish curriculum diversity is by creating a physical environment

that affirms differences. This can be done by the use of pictures, posters, art, books, maps, flags,

etc. I will also maintain high expectations for all my students, recognize achievements in all my

students, show interest every student, welcoming parent volunteers into my classroom, have

children share their experiences when appropriate learn students’ names and pronounce them

correctly, when holidays are approaching I will make sure to include a variety of holidays and

celebrations in my curriculum, as well as, evaluate teaching materials or bias, and adjust

materials accordingly, I will also have literature from different cultures and ethnicities and time

periods available for reading. In relation to the above I will make sure to use a communication

style that is consistent with the values’ of students’ cultures.

Everything I mentioned above will be appropriately incorporated into my curriculum to

create a diverse curriculum that meets the needs of culture, gender, and socio-economic and

family structures. My disposition on teaching is that we teachers are responsible for more than

just academic education, but we are the molders of life. I know that as a teacher I am responsible

for the development of students academically, socially, and culturally.
