SQL Server Database Administrator - EAS - INF01985

What we do ...
Sun Life India Service Centre is a strategic initiative of Sun Life Financial, providing IT
and operation services to Sun Life's business Units in North America and other
geographies.

Role Summary:

The candidate will be a member of a team within Data Management Services (DMS)
called Database Services Client - US The primary role on the team will be as a SQL
Server Database Administrator supporting US client applications, but the individual may
be asked to take on additional duties including: infrastructure support, client support of
CA applications, and cross-training on other DBMS platforms. The team has members in
Canada, the US and India supporting a wide range of distributed and mainframe
applications across many continents. The core hours for this position are 12:00 - 20:30
(GMT/UTC + 05:30 hour) to ensure proper crossover with North American team
members, although all team members must have the ability to handle 7X24 rotational on-
call duties, after hour change support and disaster recovery support (will require cell
phone, laptop and guaranteed coverage from home). To ensure proper training and
support for this position, the candidate's desk space should be in close proximity to the
rest of the DMS team members located in the ISC

Main Accountabilities:

o Administrative support of SQL Server versions 2000, 2005 and 2008 including:
Database Engine, Integration Services (DTS, SSIS) and Analysis Services (star schema
and cube development)
o Infrastructure support of SQL Server versions 2000, 2005, 2008 including:
server/instance installs (stand-alone and clustered), service-pack upgrades, hot fixes,
client tool installs, readiness programs, new feature exploitation, research and
development (as needed by Infrastructure manager)
o Support of application and database upgrades from existing SQL versions to
SQL2008
o Pro-active and reactive performance analysis, monitoring, troubleshooting and
resolution of issues
o Migration of database objects from development through production following
documented standards, policies and procedures (Change Management Process)
o Monitoring and support of nightly production batch cycles
o Organizing and monitoring personal workload and escalating to manager when
issues arise
o Regular review of database maintenance and performance improvement procedures
o Ensuring the proper setup and validation of backup and restore processes
o Participation in a rotational on-call schedule
o Occasional participation in after-hours and weekend support of production
implementations, infrastructure activities, and various disaster recovery exercises
o Regular database capacity planning related to database growth and system
utilization; trend analysis
o Working closely with other team members, technical/team leads, management,
specialized IT areas and application support teams to ensure consistent delivery and
quality of database services
o Helping define, document and implement consistent standards and procedures
across the team
o Writing T-SQL stored procedures and functions to support internal processes and
improve system performance
o Maintaining up-to-date documentation and procedures for all supported applications
and environments
o Managing medium to large projects and participating in a variety of projects
through the entire project lifecycle
o Maintaining 99.99% availability for all production environments
o Assisting clients with various issues related to connectivity, permissions, access,
etc…
o Evaluation of functionality and features with newer versions of the SQL Server
DBMS
o Sharing ideas for process improvement and innovative solutions to known problems

Qualification & Work Experience:

o BE / B Tech /MCA / M Tech / Proven administration/analyst skills preferably with


a degree in Computer Science or related technology degree/diploma, or equivalent
experience
o 3 to 5 years of SQL Server database administration experience handling medium to
large databases
o Excellent verbal and written communication skills
o Experience with on-call support and trouble shooting
o Strong T-SQL skills that include a thorough understanding of system tables, stored
procedures, functions, triggers, and SQL tuning
o SQL Server 2000, 2005 or 2008 certification
o Hands-on experience with SQL Server installations and patching
o Strong knowledge of SQL Server database tuning using Profiler, Index Tuning
Wizard, Dynamic Management Views and Functions (DMVs), and other third-party tools
o Strong knowledge of SQL Server Management Studio and Business Intelligence
Development Studio
o Strong knowledge of SQL Server database backup and recovery strategies
o Strong knowledge of SQL Server replication, mirroring, log shipping, maintenance
plans and DR recovery strategies
o Experience with Sybase Power Designer and Embarcadero DBArtisan
o Experience with Redgate SQL Backup tools
o Some knowledge of data-mapping and logical and physical data modeling
o Experience with SQL Server 2005 and 2008 running on the Windows Server 2008
operating system
o Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle several tasks efficiently
