Cooperative Learning Lesson Plan

I. Describe the Class

This lesson plan is for a classroom of twenty-nine 4th grade students. Two of the students are

second language learners, and one student is learning disabled. There are no special education

students in this class.

II. Subject/Skill

Science – Identifying the different parts of a plant (roots, stem, leaves, flowers, etc.)

III. Objective(s)

After watching a movie about plants, students will be put into groups of four. The group will

then be asked to bring their own plant to class and identify at least five of its parts, as well as at

least two things plants need to survive.

IV. Procedures

The teacher will introduce the lesson by having a picture or drawing of a plant at the front of the

class for every student to see. They will explain the functions of each part, and then they will

introduce the movie to the students. After watching the movie, students will be put into groups to

begin working on their objective (group goals/positive interdependence). The teacher will walk
around the classroom quietly to observe group interactions, as well as answer any questions the

students may have.

V. Materials

Pencils, paper, whiteboard, a picture of a plant, Plant Life movie, and a real plant (purchased

with parents’ permission/supervision).

VI. Grouping Structures

Students will be split into groups of four for this assignment. In the classroom, they will discuss

their projects. In the computer lab, they will research information about their group plant.

VII. Modifications

English Language Learners: To modify this lesson for ELL, bring in a translator to help the

student understand the lesson in their native language.

Learning Disabled: This lesson is beneficial to learning disabled students because not only do

they receive information from a movie, they also will receive knowledge and perhaps a better

level of understanding from their peers. One-on-one student/teacher time will also be beneficial

to LD students because they will have quiet time to work with their teacher to better understand

the assignment.

Gifted Learners: Gifted learners could have their assignment modified by building a plant from

construction paper. A more complex, hands-on assignment will benefit a gifted learner greatly.

VIII. Assessment

After students finish their assignments, they will present their flower to the class. The teacher

will ask them questions written to decide whether they have truly understood the lesson or not.
The students will be graded on a scale from A-F, A being the highest possible grade. Students

who name all parts of the plants as well as two things it needs to survive will receive an A for

this lesson.

For homework, students will be asked to look in their own backyards for plants. They will be

required to identify at least 3 different plants, and at least 4 parts of each individual plant in their

yard. The next day, they will bring their findings to class.
