III. SUMMARY OF THE OJT EXPERIENCE

“DON’T LIMIT YOUR CHALLENGES. CHALLENGE YOUR LIMITS.” These are the
first words that came out of my mind when I came to Makati because it’s a great challenge
for me to do my internship in Makati Palace Hotel. It’s a whole new adjustment for me
coping with daily activities in the “richest city in the Philippines”. Riding the MRT,
commuting every day, is very challenging in Manila especially dealing with the traffic at
NLEX. But despite everything, I conquered my fears and just did my best on my internship.

On my 1st day on the hotel, I was interviewed by Mr. Jerome Gapud, the assistant
executive housekeeper and the overall in charge of the OJT operations. He was really
surprised that I was from STI College Dagupan. He said “that was waaaay too far from here.”
I’m really proud because they made me feel that they were grateful having me there too. He
asked me why I chose to do my internship there and I said “Because I want to explore my
boundaries.” And he said “Wow, Pangasinenses are really brave.” After the interview, he
oriented me about the different rules and regulations and of course the basics about the hotel.

On my first week, I learned about the standard cleaning of hotel rooms especially the
comfort rooms. Every details of it must be observed. Mirrors shouldn’t have stains and metal
fixtures shouldn’t have watermarks. I
learned all of these already from my
past OJT but the difference is, I
learned how to do the beddings thus
it’s a great achievement for me
especially doing it on King and Queen
Beds.

I, doing bed make up (twin beds)

Every week, we were assigned to different Room Attendants. They said we should be
rotated to all the RA’s so that we can gain different knowledge because each of them has
different skills and styles. When I was assigned in the floor areas, they taught me the proper
way of dusting the hallway. Dusting also has a standard way. They said that it should be
counter clockwise. When you start at the left you’ll end up in the right way.

I believe that every hotel has their culture in cleaning and in Makati Palace Hotel. This
is their standard room cleaning operations. In the Vacant Dirty Room status, of course first,
you should knock three times and say “Housekeeping.” When you enter the room, the first
thing you should do is the “Air-out” (opening the windows so the air and bad odours would
be released). Second, you should put chemicals on the toilet bowl. Third, you should strip the
bed and pillows and do the “Trash out” where you should remove all the garbage inside the
room and put the soiled dishes in the sink. Fourth, you should wash the soiled dishes and
clean the bathroom. In cleaning the bathroom, you should start from the cleanliest to the
dirtiest. The vanity mirror and the sink should go first. Second, you should clean the bath tub
and last is the toilet bowl and after that, you should vacuum the bathroom floor and replenish
all the amenities inside the bathroom. In the Vacant Dirty room status, the bathroom should
always be the first to be cleaned so that the particles and air coming from the mattress will be
absorbed by the bathroom.

Pictures of hotel comfort rooms

In the beddings, you should first pull out the bed and put a flat sheet on it, miter and tuck
it in. Second, you should put the duvet sheet inside the duvet cover and miter it on the bed.
After that, you should put the pillow case and arrange the bed back to its position and after
that, you’re done on the beddings. Dusting is the final thing that you must do. It should be
counter clockwise. After dusting, you must replenish all the amenities. And then vacuum the
carpet. After that, you should do the last look where you should check if the room’s needs are
complete. After the last look, put some air freshener and then you’re good.

In the Make Up Room (MUR) room status, there is quite a difference in the sequence of
cleaning the rooms. In the MUR room status, the beddings should be done first. There are
two reasons why. First, if the guest is in, or just arrived of course, they want to rest right? If
you didn’t do the beddings, where will they take a rest? Second reason is for sanitary
purposes. And aside from the sequence the difference is MUR should take only 10-15
minutes unlike the VD status, it takes 30-45mins.

After learning everything about standard room cleaning, I was assigned in the
laundry department of the hotel. I learned about the proper folding the different kinds of
towels, linens, sheets and duvet cover. My internship requires 200 hours only that’s why after
I’m assigned in the laundry area, I’m almost done in my OJT.

Makati Palace Hotel requires OJTs to undergo the actual examination and the written
examination. I did the actual examination. I cleaned a VD status room from the bathroom to
the beddings and dusting and by God’s grace; I successfully passed the two examinations.

CHAPTER III: ASSESMENT OF OJT PRACTICUM

A. NEW KNOWLEDGE

I learned that the mattress should be rotated every three months to avoid deformation
and to avoid sagging of the mattress; had learned the beddings used by the Makati Palace
Hotel like the bed pad, bed skirt, top sheet and the bed blanket; and learned the proper
way of cleaning of the comfort room with the use of the right chemicals and tools.

learned rules such as when you start dusting a room from the right, one should end to
the left, stripping is first done to make sure small valuable items are not included with the
used linens and lastly, when cleaning a comfort room, one should start from the top
which is the mirror, dry the bathtub and end with the floor tiles to ease the work and to
make the work faster.

B. THEORIES ACTUALLY SEEN IN THE PRACTICE

For me the theory that I’ve seen in the practice was competency-based education better
meets individual learning needs. I’ve learned that the OJT was really different from learning
in school. The actual world of the hospitality industry is a big world that if you go there, you
need to be competent enough because you need to bring out the best in you to be good
enough for the industry.
The reality is in work. That’s where you can shape your future and build up yourself to
be a better person.
C. FEEDBACK THAT CAN BE GIVEN TO THE COMPANY OR INSTITUTION

I’ve learned a lot during my training in Makati Palace Hotel. One of the most
important attributes that the staffs in the hotel taught me is self- confidence. A person’s
confidence is based upon one’s knowledge of the job, and most importantly, one’s own
personal belief in our own abilities. A leader who demonstrates his knowledge and the
confidence to use that knowledge will usually inspire others to gain and use the same
knowledge. Even though I am only a trainee, they don’t treat me like others. And as a trainee
I don’t feel uncomfortable as I worked with them. They also encourage me to go on with my
studies until I become professional. And I’m glad that I experienced all of these inside
Makati Palace Hotel. They proved that when you are in the hospitality industry, good attitude
is essential in the everyday life and daily operations.

BENEFITS GAINED IN THE OJT

They helped me to become more familiar with the realities in working. Sometimes, I’m
stressed and feeling disappointed because I always think that I cannot spend my vacation
with my family because I am busy fulfilling my 200 hour requirement. But, the training
helped me to become more mature to face the reality in future and it exposed me to different
kinds of people and to the industry that I might be in.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

All I can say is I didn’t encounter a heavy problem. The only problem I experienced is
when my actual examination begun, at the same time, the supply of sheets were lacking
and I was worried that my time is running out but nevertheless, one of the laundry
supervisors, Mr. Jossel Culivo, helped me and gave me new sets of sheets.

Another problem is: an incident happened where four STI College Muñoz students
were found sleeping in a Suite Room worth 18,000 a night. The hotel owner, supervisor,
and general manager saw them. The owner of the hotel got mad and terminated the four
trainees. That’s why the assistant executive housekeeper got mad and they told us to be
responsible on our own actions and the school name STI College was quite affected but
despite everything, it was already okay.
