Studies on brain structures in cattle are rare, and even more seldom concerning bullfighting bulls. Morphometric alterations can determine behavioral changes; bullfighting bulls have unique “sui generis” attitudes in Zoology, with repetitive and innate attacks.
Therefore, it becomes interesting and accurate to investigate some parameters, namely, the volume of the encephalon, height of the pre-frontal cortex, the Varolio Pons, the thalamus and the hippocampus, and their correlations and dimensions. According to these objectives, between July and September 2017, brains were collected from 14bullfighting bulls, demonstrating a correlation of 0.63 between the Pre-Frontal Cortex and the Volume of the Encephalon, significant at the 5% level.
Based on the assessment of the behavior carried out by the Portuguese Association of Breeders of Bullfighting Bulls and by crossing these data with the values obtained by the morphometric studies conducted, is pointed out a putative correlation between the hippocampus (< 30 mm2) and the bravery.
