SUBJECT: 'Crossing the Narmada’: Action-Plan.

The purpose of this report is to help in making decision about organizing 'Crossing
the Narmada' event by the students of Chandrabala Modi Academy school as part
of a campaign against drug use.

The benefits associated with the event as well as risks & mitigation have been
analyzed through this report. An action plan has been chalked out in this report.

All the precautions & required homework for successful event has been planned in
this report.
Executive Summary

As the society is suffering from growing drug use in smaller towns and there are
possibilities of school children getting hit by the malaise. So there’s a need of an
event that would bring about awareness in the school community on drug abuse.

The idea of organizing 'Crossing the Narmada' event is quite innovative &
involving. If executed carefully it will certainly succeed in building awareness
against drug use, inculcating the spirit of adventure among the students, creating a
sense of camaraderie among the staff, bonding the parents with the school, the
students with the teachers and creating good will for the school.

But there are some risks associated with it & we must have to visualize all the risks
& plan carefully to mitigate this. We must plan the whole event in advance to
avoid any miss happening.

Further a chunk of contingency plans is needed in case any unfortunate thing

happens.

Situational Analysis

As the society is suffering from growing drug use in smaller towns and there are
possibilities of school children getting hit by the malaise. So there’s a need of of an
event that would bring about awareness in the school community on drug abuse.

As suggested by Mr. Srivastava, Deputy Superintendent of Police, and Mr.

Srivatsan, President of the local Rotary Club that the school should do something
to build awareness about the harmful effects of drug use, and that there should be a
campaign against the use of drugs.

Organizing 'Crossing the Narmada' event is an important opportunity to build the

image of the school besides educating the children against the use of drugs.

The school had not organized an event like this before. There was the possibility of
students getting hurt or even losing their lives, owing to inadequate preparation or
last minute loss of confidence. Implementation of the decision involved convincing
the staff, students and parents, coaching the children to build stamina, co-
ordination with the police, making arrangements for adverse contingencies, if any.
He was aware of the difficulty he would face in convincing the parents of the
participating students. He was not sure how the management of the school would
react to his initiative.
Crossing the Narmada::Benefits
It will certainly succeed in building awareness against drug use, inculcating the
spirit of adventure among the students, creating a sense of camaraderie among the
staff, bonding the parents with the school, the students with the teachers and
creating good will for the school. It could demonstrate the meaning of
commitment, stretching ones abilities and pursuing dreams beyond the books. It
will send a message to the parents that their children were capable of larger
achievements and that they were undermining their potential. The event would be
innovative and involving. It would involve the community, the students, and the
staff passionately. This could have other spin off benefits like building a team
culture, inculcation of achievement orientation, and nurturing a favorable attitude
in the neighborhood towards a new school.

Risks & Mitigations

There are some risks associated with it & we must have to visualize all the risks &
plan carefully to mitigate this.

• There’s a chance of stampede or mischief by outsiders so to avoid that police

& local administration should be informed about the event and request them
to arrange for proper security.
• The college administration should see the Narmada bank & its flow. There
might be a lot of differences between swimming in pool & in river. The risk
factor is high so college administration should seek the support from the
local fishermen community in arranging for safety boats and support
equipment like safety rings.
• A mock drill with all safety precautions at bank of river is suggested.
• Identifying able swimmers and requesting them to be around to handle the
emergencies, if any.
• Taking care of any negative publicity or generation of fear psychosis among
the participants, staff, and the parents.
• Rains pose a major threat to the event. If river overflows then it might get
too risky to have such an activity. College administration should keep
another site ready where pooja and some other sports activities can be
conducted.
Action Plan

• The students who would swim across would be identified well in advance
and trained for at least six weeks in the company swimming pool, to which
the school had access. Their parents would be informed and requested to co-
operate with the school.
• The teachers would be requested to provide full co-operation to make the
event a grand success. Co-operation from the staff was needed for liasioning
with the parents, keeping the students motivated, making the administrative
arrangements for security of the swimmers and keeping the crowd under
control.
• Keeping the media informed about the event. The purpose behind the event
needed to be publicized in advance to build the tempo.
• Organizing coaching camp to identify the swimmers and making them
competent. This needed practice sessions for more than two hours everyday.
• Local media would be invited to cover the event and build further publicity.
• Getting the all requisite logistics ready like banners, pooja material life-
guards, boats etc.
• On a scheduled day the entire school, along with the parents, would go to the
bank of river Narmada. En-route they would display banners and shout
slogans against drug use. On the bank they would perform pooja and seek
the blessings of the river Goddess.
• About thirty students would jump into the river and swim over to the other
side.
• Using the slogan - Down with Drugs. Join hands to fight against this
menace.
Conclusion:

Although the college has no prior experience in organizing this type of event, The
planned & careful execution of the event 'Crossing the Narmada’ will certainly
going to help college as well as society.

It will help college by building awareness against drug use, inculcating the spirit of
adventure among the students, creating a sense of camaraderie among the staff,
bonding the parents with the school, the students with the teachers and creating
good will for the school. It could demonstrate the meaning of commitment,
stretching ones abilities and pursuing dreams beyond the books. It will send a
message to the parents that their children were capable of larger achievements and
that they were undermining their potential.

But since a lot of risks involved, a very cautious approach is required. Follow all
the safety precaution, Do proper homework, Run a Mock-Drill & then rock with
the idea 'Crossing the Narmada’.
