The Buick Riviera was the well

thought out masterpiece of some of the
best designers and engineers of its time
back in the early ’60s. Riviera possessed
an aura of sophistication and luxury
quite as rare as that of the famous
Mediterranean playground for which
it was named. Officially, the clay model
concept called XP-715, was the perfect
design to revive the La Salle brand that
died way back in 1940. GM designer Bill
Mitchell presented his European design
and style to Cadillac, and when Cadillac
management proved indifferent to the
car, he tried to sell it to Chevrolet and
Pontiac. Neither were interested. But

AUGUST 2016 LOWRIDER

To start the season fresh, we kicked off our annual 2016

tour at the University of Phoenix stadium. Being that this
was our third consecutive year at the stadium, if felt like
home as we perused over 600 of the best custom lowriders
on the West Coast.
As with every show, someone’s ready to introduce the
world to a new creation, and this year Johnny Salters busted
out his two-tone '56 Chevy Bel Air. A well-distinguished
builder, he’s built some incredibly stunning Chevys in South
Carolina and this one was definitely a class act.
In addition, Rudy Sandoval flossed and introduced
the world to his red '76 Ford LTD. He's the owner of the
infamous blue '73 Ford LTD, which we featured last year
as a cover car. This new one did not disappoint and he
showcased them side by side.
Final score. Furthermore, a handful of legendary vehicles from the

’70s were also displayed at the show.

Among those legendary vehicles were
Jesse Valadez’s '64 Impala, “Gypsy Rose,”
from East L.A., as well as Joe Ray’s '71
Buick Riviera, “Dress to Kill.”
Code-named the “Summit of
Champions”, we entitled this show that
particular moniker because we had both
the 2014 and 2015 Lowriders of the Year
on display in Arizona, and it was defi-
nitely a historic moment. Other notable
mentions included Bobby Garcia from
Goodtimes Car Club, who brought out
his '87 Oldsmobile Cutlass, "RM Series,"
and then Chris Roark from Tradicionals
Car Club brought out his '58 Impala,
which is appropriately named “Final

But the list didn’t end there, a roster of
heavy hitters also included Jesse Saldana’s
'65 Impala from Thee Artistics called
“Blvd Madness,” Daryl Hernandez’s
green '64 called “Chump Change,” Jose’s
'58 “South Side Blue” from Los Angeles

was a gala event with a list of A-class cars
of no compare.
Franks Hydraulics sponsored the
action-packed hop that featured over 30
competitors. With up to four rides hop-
ping at the same time, the atmosphere
was intense while DJ Drea kicked the
beats. Some of the clean street hoppers
included Miles “Twin” Gordon’s '97 Lin-

from the Hop Shop with her '59 Impala.
An accompanying concert featured
a variety of artists that took the stage,
like J Romero, Mob Fam, Lighter Shade
of Brown, Baby Bash, and it all came to
an end with Benton Wood. Definitely
one for the history books, this was yet
another great kickoff to our tour and it’s
definitely a season opener that paves the

wife equals a happy life.
At first glance, the bike is mesmer-
izing. With a bold mix of magenta color
tones, the bike sports a brilliant hue of
pantones, which were painted and pat-
terned to perfection. Considered by many
color experts to be a color to represent
change and transformation, the magenta
pantones found on this bike are definitely
indicative of the transformation that
took place. With just about every nut and
bolt removed, the Harley’s engine casing
has plenty of chrome and engraving, the
stance is perfect, and the oversized front
wheel gives this Harley the curb appeal of
a big-boy toy.
In his attempt to build a Harley that
would easily sit besides the best, he is
proud to have placed at every show he
has entered and has even more plans for
the bike. Of course, this is something that
only a true enthusiast would ever under-
stand, because in our world there is really
no such thing as a finished project—only
the next project.
In all, this bike is truly worthy of grac-
ing the pages of LOWRIDER magazine.
We tip our hats to Ernie for pulling off an
incredible job and we salute his wife and
his grandmother for staying by his side—
and on his back. Of course, Ernie made
sure to mention that both his wife and his
grandmother were both instrumental in
making his dreams come true.

hold of his attention and replicate a more California feel
based on the movies he watched as a kid. On Mother’s Day
2009, Anthony’s search ended when he found a car that
embodied everything a lowrider should be—a '66 Buick
Riviera for sale about six hours away in Chicago. It didn’t
take him long to make the decision to drive the distance to
purchase the sleek Buick and then make it back home.
Anthony brought the Buick to Culver Customs in
Louisville, Kentucky, where paint and body master Josh
Culver handled all the bodywork and added a Sunrise
Pearl basecoat. Gary Seeds of Badseed Customs laid down
the patterns and metalflake to accentuate the color. The
next step was updating the cabin to flow with the fresh
new exterior. Anthony brought the Riviera to DLux Interi-
ors in Jeffersonville, Indiana, where stitch professional Dee
outfitted the entire interior in custom colors and material.
To make a ’60s Buick the perfect lowrider, you need
suspension, and Anthony knew exactly where to go. His
good friend Jason Caranto was enlisted to give the Buick
the perfect hardline setup to add to the long Riviera.

popular ’59-’64 Chevrolets Impalas. After years of R&D, their engineers have
developed an innovative chassis that provides a low ride height, coupled with
comfort, excellent handling properties, and even better is the fact that the frames
are all fully customizable.

HOW TO REMOVE WEATHER

CORROSION FROM YOUR
PRECIOUS METALS
This month’s paint/metal tip is brought to
you by the good folks from Axalta Coating
Systems. Their coating chemists would like to
introduce you to the cure for metal and alumi-
num corrosion resulting from extreme weather
conditions. Axalta’s 225S is an aluminum metal
product that contains an acidic metal cleaner
and conditioner formulated for aluminum. It
effectively removes corrosion, resulting from
weathering, and prepares the surface for the
use of their step two Aluminum Refinish-
ing System 226S. That next step process is a
conversion coating that’s designed to stabilize
aluminum, producing a high degree of corrosion
resistance for adhesion when applying a paint
system.
If you are restoring the metal body of any
old car or truck project, chances are that over
the years the weather elements came into play
somewhere and left some corrosion and rust
problems everywhere. Once you get your hands
on a gallon of 225S, you will find that it is a very
simple solution to use. Axalta Coating System What’s more, the new AME chassis is built to last and it sports 3x4 main

For this DIY installment, we’re
literally getting under the hood of
our '53 Chevy “Bomb” Truck. After
looking at its current condition, we
decided that it was necessary to ad-
dress the tired, hole-tattered firewall,
so we had it removed and replaced.
Just like many projects, we dis-
covered that the firewall was riddled
with holes and dents from past abuse
and poor installs, so it was time to
get things prim and proper. To do
this we decided to utilize a thicker
piece of 16-gauge cold-rolled sheet-
metal. Prior to that, we started off by
using Miller Electric Manufacturing
Company’s Spectrum 375 Xtreme
plasma cutter to do the dirty work of
removing the old firewall and then
