DISCIPLE LIFE 02

A DISCIPLE’S ATTITUDE TO SIN

INTRODUCTION: The life of a disciple is a life in constant
development and growth to become like the Master. We learned in
lesson one that the primary character of Jesus that a disciple will
eventually should be like is the fact that Jesus lived a sinless life. He
did not sin even once despite being tempted in all things as we are.
He only do what is good. Just imagine that we can learn from Jesus,
the Master, to do all that is good! We can become more and more free from our lusts and sinful nature

JESUS HAD A RADICAL ATTITUDE CONCERNING SIN.

Matthew 5:27–30 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that
everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If
your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your
members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off
and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

CHRIST’S DISCIPLES ARE EXHORTED TO HAVE THE SAME MIND.

Philippians 2:5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
1 Peter 4:1–2 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking,
for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no
longer for human passions but for the will of God.

THE DISCIPLE MUST LIKEWISE HAVE A RADICAL ATTITUDE CONCERNING SIN.

1. Acknowledge the authority of the truth, the Word of God
John 3:19–21 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness
rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light
and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to
the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” Humble ourselves
James 4:6–10 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the
humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 gDraw near to
God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-
minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to
gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

2. Judge ourselves instead of blaming others

Matthew 7:1–3 Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be
judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your
brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?

OUR MOTIVATION
Being transformed from a sinful human into the perfect image of Christ is a process, a battle. But two things
should be our motivation to “press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
1. The example of Christ
Hebrews 12:1-2 “… let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run
with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who
for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right
hand of the throne of God
2. The love of Christ - The greatest motivation for disciples is love for Him who loved us first and who gave
His life for us.
1 John 4:19 We love because he first loved us.
2 Corinthians 5:14–15 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all,
then all died; 15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him
who died for them and rose again.
3. This prize: to be like Him, and see Him as He is.
1 John 3:2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we
know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

SHARING: (1) Complete this sentence: Because Jesus loves me, I will not ……… (2) Give an example of
mindset towards sin that you observe today which is not radical as Jesus have against sin.
