Nr 1 Season 2017/2018

START OF AN OLYMPIC SEASON


The 1st World cup qualifying for 2018 Olympics was in Budapest last weekend. After summer camps in Netherlands and Poland in July and August, Peter
Murphy and Augustin Géré represented Luxembourg. The level of the competition was very high but both competed well. The objective is to gather
experience for the next Olympic cycle, leading
to Beijing 2022, but also to try for the 2018 Olympics if possible.

Results from Budapest:

This coming week the boys are at World Cup 2 in Dordrecht NL

During the summer we also had Julie, Jimmy and Marco Kiesgen
at the summer camp in Oberstdorf for the first time. Well done!

Nr 2 Season 2017/2018

WORLDCUP 2
This last weekend we had the 2nd World cup in Dordrecht, NL. Peter Murphy
and Augustin Géré again represented Luxembourg. The results were similar to
Budapest, with both boys skating well but not quite good enough to make it
out of the first rounds. Highlight of the weekend was Augustin beating the
Belgian champion in his 500m heat, setting a new National Record, and
finishing 0.1s off a qualifying position.

Next weekend we have the traditional “Opening Games” in Turnhout (B)

Nr 3 Season 2017/2018

ITALY AND BELGIUM


From 19-22 October we had a new “first” for the Luxembourg team. Peter Murphy,
Augustin Géré and Caroline Murphy represented Luxembourg at the Alta
Valtelina Trophy in Bormio (Italy). The competition is one of the most famous
outside the Worldcup Circuit, as a result of the 1100m altitude and fast ice.
The outstanding result was from Augustin, overall 2nd in Junior Boys B (U18) equalling
exactly his 500m national record set earlier this season. Overall results:

Nr 4 Season 2017/2018

FIRST STARCLASS & BENELUXCUP


The first Starclass competition of the season took place in Davos (Switzerland).
Peter Murphy, Augustin Géré and Caroline Murphy all made good starts to
Europa Cup Final qualification, with Augustin almost assured of a final place already.

Sunday 19 November saw the first Beneluxcup in Eindhoven (NL)


Jimmy Kiesgen and Elisa Aulamo represented Luxembourg,
Jimmy skated excellently and became the latest Luxembourg
skater to achieve a Starclass qualifying time

FIRST QUALIFIER FOR 2018 EUROPACUP FINAL


The last two weekends we had Starclass competitions in
Bormio (Italy) and Oberstdorf (Germany). Anna Ruysschaert
represented Luxembourg In Bormio, coming back from six weeks off
after injury. Though obviously a bit rusty Anna managed a PB over
500m, going under 50s for the first time. Overall results:

In Oberstdorf Luxembourg was represented by Max Backström,


Peter Murphy, Augustin Géré and Caroline Murphy. The highlight
of the competition was Augustin who with his 4th place overall
qualified for the 2018 Europacup Final. Peter and Caroline remain
in qualifying positions for the final, with one competition to go.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL BENELUXCUP


Last Sunday 17th December, Kockelscheuer saw for the 3rd
time an edition of the Beneluxcup, held for skaters from
Luxembourg, Belgium & the South of the Netherlands.
78 skaters from 10 clubs took part in 80 races, including
4 exciting relays at the end. A combination of sickness and
holidays meant there were only 14 skaters from Luxembourg.

However all the local skaters did their best, the highlights being Peter Murphy, giving
Luxembourg winner for the 3rd year running and Anna Ruysschaert, 3rd in the B division.

Augustin Géré and Caroline Murphy could not compete


on the day due to injury, but they could both help out
With official duties, Augustin as track steward (the person
replacing the blocks during races) and Caroline as
assistant referee.

SPORTSPRESS.LU AWARDS NIGHT 2017


10 days before the Beneluxcup on 7 December, Peter Murphy collected the award for
“Jeune Espoir Masculin” or Young Sportsman at the Luxembourg Sports Press Awards
held at the Coque. This was for the Gold and Silver Medals won at the European
Youth Olympic Festival in Erzurum.

Nr 7 Season 2017/2018

EUROPACUP QUALIFIERS KNOWN


A lot happened since our last news in December. The most important was the last
Starclass competition in Leeuwarden. After the 3-day competition Peter and Caroline
Murphy had qualified for the Europacup Final, (or European Junior Championships). Peter
could not take part, so needed his closest rivals not to overtake him in the overall points
classification. Results from Leeuwarden;

EUROPACUP FINAL & REGIONAL FINAL


Regiofinale
Jimmy & Julie Kiesgen and Elisa Aulamo represented
Luxembourg in the Regional Final, which brings together
the best U14 from Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.
All skated well, with Jimmy very close to the podium,

The following weekend the Europacup Final, or European
Junior Championship, took place, with Peter & Caroline Murphy and
Augustin Géré competing against the best Juniors from all over
Europe. Although no one made the podium, all were able to show that
Luxembourg skaters are well placed against their European peers.

FINALE OF THE INTERNATIONAL SEASON


In the last fortnight we had skaters in action in three
competitions in Belgium and France. Jimmy, Julie , Marco Kiesgen
and Anna Ruysschaert took part in both the Easter Cup in Gent
and the International Closing Games in Turnhout, with each of
the juniors on the podium in one competition.
