MY NOTES FOR: A WARNING AGAINST DRIFTING
Drifting is dangerous. It’s time for Christians to anchor themselves in the Word of God.

A Warning Against DriftingKey Passage:Hebrews 2:1-4Supporting Scripture:Numbers

32:23IntroductionDrifting is a slow process of change that occurs over time. We’re not usually aware of
it until the change becomes great enough to notice. Then we suddenly wonder what has happened.
Drifting can occur in a nation when it moves away from its foundational principles or in our individual
lives if we do not pay close attention to what we have heard concerning the Word of God (Heb.
2:1).Sermon PointsHow are we drifting? With the current of immoralityWith the current of financial
debtWith the current of political confusionWith the current of liberal teaching in the churchWhy do
believers drift? We allow ourselves to slowly depart from the Word of God.The longer we let ourselves
drift, the faster we go.How do we stop drifting?Make a decision not to live this way any longer.By God’s
grace, power, and mercy desire to become who He wants us to be.Be willing to change.Ask God to
change us.What are signs of drifting?Loss of desire for the Word of GodLoss of desire to prayLoss of
desire to giveLoss of desire to talk to others about JesusLoss of the awareness of God’s
presenceIncreased desire for the world’s waysConsequences of driftingDepart from God’s will and enter
into sinMiss God’s best for our livesGrieve the heart of GodDevelop hardening toward God and
softening toward sinHow to recover from driftingRealize that you are drifting.Repent by asking God to
forgive you and turning back to obedience.Return to an attitude of submission to God.SummaryDrifting
is dangerous because we relinquish control and allow outside forces to carry us where they will. For
believers this will invariably lead us away from the Lord and His Word. But if we’ll turn back to God in
repentance and pick up the oars of obedience, He’ll give us the strength to begin the journey upstream
into His good and perfect will.
