WATER QUALITY

Solubility of oxygen decreases as water temperature increases. Therefore the rate of chemical

reactions increases with increasing water temperature.Temperature affects metabolism, growth,
and reproduction in aquatic ecosystem( ) and subsequently leads to decay of organic material in
water caused by either chemical process or microbial action on treated sewage or dead vegetation(
). The need for oxygen depends on the species and life stage.Likewise, some organisms are
adapted to lower oxygen conditions, while others require higher concentrations . In short, different
concentration of dissolved oxygen can varies the quality of water.

PRECAUTION STEP
Human errors are unavoidable in experiments, identical to the presence of air bubble in water
sample before the bottle is tightly sealed.Furthermore, exposure of sunlight would also increase
the temperature of water content that might increase the DO content. Moreover, the eye level
should be perpendicular to the meniscus of the water level to prevent parallax error when taking
readings from the dropper , pipette, measuring cylinder, burette and beaker .Last but not least, the
number of trials should be repeated least three times to obtain average reading to induce more
accurate value.

CONCLUSION
Amount of dissolved oxygen symbolizes as the indicator of water quality and could be determined
by using Winkler’s Method. The data analysed thru the experiment was considered slightly
different as if compared to the table of solubility of oxygen in natural water. In other words ,
quality of tap water is inadequate for organism to fit in. Nonetheless, it could be observed that
average quality of water is still within the tolerance of aquatic life to prevent further predicament.
