DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

BONUS-POINT PROBLEM SET

Directions: (1) Solve the following as systematically as possible. Show your complete solutions.

(2) Simplify your final answers. Answers not in simplest form will only get half of the respective points.

(3) Express your answers in four (4) decimal places.

(4) Highlight your final answers. Unhighlighted final answers will be considered incorrect. No erasures on
the final answers, otherwise, it will be voided. Use light yellow as highlighter.

I. Obtain the general solution of the following higher order linear differential equations.

1. (D3 + D2 – 4D – 4)y = 2x – 3 + 6e-2x

2. (D2 – 4D + 4)y = 7xe2x y(0) = 1; y’(0) = -1

II. Analyze the following circuit diagram.

1. A 10Ω resistor and a 20mH inductor is connected at t = 0 in series to a 10V battery. The time constant
(τ) is defined in RL circuit L/R. Solve the following:
a. the time constant
b. the current in the inductor at any time t.
c. the limiting value of the current (amount of current at time is infinity)
d. the graph of the percentage of current at the following times: 1τ, 2τ, 3τ, 4τ, and 5τ.

2. In the figure below, assume that when the switch is opened at t = 0, the charge in the capacitor is
0.005C. Find the voltage, current, and charge at the capacitor at any time t. Also, determine the current
flowing in the 2-Ω resistor after 3ms.
3. Determine the voltage flowing in the inductor at any time t if the switch is opened at t=0, after being
close for a very long time.
a. Use nodal analysis to solve for the initial value.
b. Use mesh analysis at t=0.
