Practice approaches at altitude until you are
confident in the aircraft and its performance.

h. Fly straight in approach, use airspeeds you just
practiced, don't get slow, if approach does not look
good do a go-around.

Aircraft Hours Flight Profile
First Flight Determine engine reliability.
Determine basic flight characteristics/trim.
Land safely.
Check for smooth engine performance
during run-up/takeoff.
Takeoff into ground effect/check lift off
speed.
Climb overhead airport to 3,000 ft AGL.
Climb at liftoff speed x 1.5 (max.).
Be prepared for eng. Problem at level off.
At 3,000 ft. AGL, maneuver at LSx1.2-1.5.
Gentle turns- 10-15 degrees of bank.
Pitch change (+-) 3 degrees.
Rudder movement- slow/smooth pressure
to full travel.
How effective/ smooth/ trim pressures?
Still at 3,000 ft. AGL.
Check/ monitor engine instruments.
Smooth RPM/ engine response.
Stay centered over airport-clearing turns.
If all is good, climb to 5,000 ft. AGL.
At 5,000 ft AGL.
Be prepared for eng. Problem at level off.
Repeat flight control checks.
Slow flight, down to 1.1 LS. Don't under-
speed rotor.
At 5,000 ft AGL, Down to 4,000 ft AGL.
Practice traffic pattern- landing config.
Fly downwind LSx 1.3.
Fly Base/final LSx1.2.
Fly "short final" LSx 1.1.
Practice go-arounds.
Descent to traffic pattern.
Before landing checklist.
Descend at idle RPM plus 500 to prevent
"shock cooling".
Radio calls to other traffic/tower.
Normal pattern entry.

Continue testing of systems until sure of
quality.
Plan on major inspection at 10 hour point.

Hours 11-20 Expand flight envelope.


Static and dynamic stability.
Positive longitudinal/lateral stability.

Hours 21-30 Perform tests that require max. gross wt.


Ensure acft. Is within Weight & Balance
limits at max. gross weight.
Test handling qualities at max gross wt
(slow flight, turns, climbs, descents, ect.).
Best rate of climb. Vy.
Landing Speed . Vso.
Fuel flow & consumption in climb to cruise.
Time to climb to cruise.

Hours 31-40(+) Test everything else intended to be used in


phase II operations.
Check communications equipment/xponder.
Check accuracy/utility of NAV gear (GPS,
loran, VOR.
Night flying.
Determine service ceiling.

Finish Test Phase Ensure acft. Logbooks show that the min.
test flight hours have been flown off.
Aircraft owner must certify that the acft. Is
safe to operate.
Have each test pilot that flew the aircraft
certify in writing that their portion of the test
plan were successful, and that the acft is
safe to operate.
Keep these statements with the permanent
records of the aircraft.
