AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY DESIGN

LABORATORY ACTIVITY NO.2

GOBRIN JAMES D. BSAE-4

DESIGN PROCEDURE

0BJECTIVE:
1. To transmit power in agricultural machines

2. To drive various production and post production parts of agricultural machines.

3. To transmit power or motion

4. To transmit power under various operating and loading conditions.

5. To transmit linear motion.

A.DESIGN OF BELT AND PULLEY

Classification of Belt and Pulley drive (Flat Belt, V belt)

For Belt Drive, 1.Open belt drive 2.Cross belt drive 3. Quarter turn drive

a.)To determine the angles of wrap . ∝1 and ∝2

∝1 =180 -2B = 180 -2s

Determine the T1 if not given the velocity (v) and specific weight (w).

𝑇−𝑤𝑣2/𝑔
b.) determine the T2 for both flat and V belt; = efc
𝑇2−𝑤𝑣2/𝑔

c.) Determine the power; P =(𝑇−𝑇2)𝑉, When determining the Area, A = 𝑇−𝑇2 ,when
550 𝑆−𝑆2
𝑆1−𝑤𝑣2/𝑔
determine the stress, = 𝑒 fc
𝑆2−𝑤𝑣2/𝑔

SUMMARY: If the thickness (t) is greater than area the width (b) is lesser.
B. Shaft design
Determine the shaft size

a. determine the torsional stress 𝜏xy

𝜏xy =16Mt/𝜋d3

ℎ𝑝 𝑥33000𝑥 12 63000𝑥ℎ𝑝
Where : Mt = = in lb
2𝜋𝑟𝑝𝑚 𝑟𝑝𝑚

And look for ASME code specifies for commercial steel shafting

Ss(allowable) = 8000 psi w/out keyway

Ss (allowable) =6000 psi w/ keyway

b. to determine the shaft diameter and angle of twist

first , determine the max bending and torsional moments .
By looking the ASME code for shaft w/ keyway is 6000 psi then
The formula is
16
d3 =𝜋𝑆𝑠 √(𝐾𝑏𝑀𝑏)2 + (𝐾𝑡𝑀𝑡)2
and look for standard size of shaft
and to determine the angle of twist
the formula is:
𝜃 = 584MtL/Gd4

C .Power screw
It transmit power or motion
a. to determine the torque required to raise the moving part
determine the mean diameter devide by 2 ang looking for standard
sizes and diameter in table 1
for torque(up).
Tup =FDp/(L +𝜋fDp/𝜋Dp-fL)
b. for efficiency
tan 𝜆 = L/𝜋𝐷𝑝
e =tan λ (1-f tan λ)/𝑡𝑎𝑛𝜆 +f
c.to determine the power; p= Tn/63000

F > tanλ
D. Design for Gears (spur gears)
a. determine the Speed ratio

Speed ratio = n1/n2

n1 =rpm of driver gear

n2 =rpm for driven gear

b.Service factor :from table 12 and 13 and long for load and lubrication.

by addition .

c. Design power: to determine by multiplying desired power and service

factor.
d. Module and number of driving gear
To determine solve for gear ratio by devide the t2 and t1
Where;
t2 =number of teeth of driven gear
t1 = number of teeth of the driver gear
gear ratio =speed ratio
e. Center distance ,computed as follows (see table a.1 for computed
values):
Center distance = module (t1+t2)/2

Summary :
If the service factor is bigger size the design power is bigger.
