U&O- Effluent Collection and Treatment SOP No:

System OPaL/U&O/ECTS/XXXX
SOP for Sequential Batch Reactor

Purpose:
The raw effluent shall be taken up for Biological treatment for the removal of organics,
nitrogen, phosphorus, remaining sulfides and phenols (as per outlet quality requirement),
after pH adjustment by addition of caustic or acid, as required.

Introduction:
Raw effluent is collected and pumped into the Primary Treatment Units for removal
of free and emulsified oil. After primary treatment, the effluent is taken into parallel
SBR Basins for biological degradation of organics.

There are three operating SBR basins in the plant. These SBR basins work in
sequence and the influent flow is distributed using Automatic Gates provided at the
Inlet Chamber of SBR basins. The SBR basins are equipped with air blowers,
diffusers, Return Activated Sludge (RAS) pumps, Surplus Activated Sludge (SAS)
pumps, Decanters, Auto valves, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) etc. All cycles
will be automatically controlled using PLC.

SBR works with a simple batch sequence of aeration and non-aeration phases that are
controlled by repeating timers. The same operation cycle is in use in both reactors, only the
start times of the cycle are shifted.
Each cycle consists of the following combined phases:
FILL / AERATE FA
SETTLE / DECANT SD
Within the durations of the combined phases, start- and stop time for the basic phase Aerate
(A) canbe adjusted for each reactor by SCADA input. Start- and stop time for Fill (F) and the
start time forDecant (D) can be adjusted only in the PLC program.

Excess sludge at a consistency level of approx 0.8% - 1.0% will be pumpedintermittently

from SAS pump to the sludge sump. The sludge from sludge sump istaken for dewatering or
drawing as per process requirement.
The treated effluent from the SBR Basins will then pass through Tertiary.

The biologically treated water is drawn off by a Decanter.

Process Chemistry
The system selected is capable of achieving the following:
Biological selection of floc forming to suppress bulking / foaming and allow cocurrent
nitrification / denitrification (N/DN) and Bio-P
Bio-degradation of organics present in the wastewater by Extended Aeration
Process

Pre-Checks:
1. All safety showers and eye washes are operational.
2. All pumps, blowers, XVs should be in auto mode.
3. All analysers such as DO should be in line.
4. Open valves GV-11136, 11137, 11145, 11146, 1101, 1102, 1109, 1110, 1117, 1118.

Procedure for SEQUENTIAL BATCH REACTOR:

SN Activity Responsibility
1.0 SBR PRECHECK.
1.1 The first is to make certain that all mechanical, electrical and Panel/Field
control equipment is operating properly. Officer
2.0 FILLING / AERATION PHASE (FA)
2.1 The inflow in SBR comes from ACT . Info
2.2 Effluent filling get started as the Automatic gate of SBR Panel/Field
compartment (MGT-1801) get opened through discrete time Officer
sequences following predetermined cycles.
2.3 RAS pump 74-PM-105A will start. Panel
2.4 Aeration through Air blowers (74-MBA-101 A/B/C) will get started
after 15 minutes during FA phase.
2.5 Effluent filling will stop after 120 minutes and the Automatic Info
gate of SBR compartment (MGT-1801) will get closed.
RAS pump 74-PM-105A will also stop.
2.6 The selector air valves are opened at the beginning of the aeration Info
phase (any number of cycles can be chosen) for a pre-set time.
2.7 Aeration through Air blowers (74-MBA-101 A/B/C) will get Field Officer
stopped after 180 minutes from starting of FA phase .
3.0 SETTLING / DECANTING PHASE (SD)
3.1 There is no inflow to the SBR compartment currently in the Field Officer
combined phase SD. Also the blower for the aeration and the
RAS pump are stopped.
3.2 The duration of the settling period is also time controlled. When Panel/Field
the decant phase is started, the decanter (74-DM-101) is Officer
automatically moved downwards.
3.3 When the bottom water level (BWL) is reached, the decanting Info/Field
device stops. The decanting device remains in this position for a Officer

set time (BWL hold time) and returns back to the park position.
3.4 During the decanting period surplus sludge (SAS) is drawn off. Info
The amount is determined through the last measured value of
dry solids in the reactor.
3.5 SAS-pumps provide the removal of Surplus activated Sludge. The Info/Panel
operating time is set according to the level of solids to be Officer
removed.
