Lesson Idea Name: Money Money Money

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 2nd grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE2.MD.8 Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes,
nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately.

Technology Standard Addressed: Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and
demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences. Students:

c. use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in
a variety of ways.

Selected Technology Tool:

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): edublogs.com

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level): (Level determined by the specific lesson idea)
☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Describe how you could address Universal Design for Learning principles
to extend and support the learning experiences for all students.

Lesson idea implementation: As you address the standards, what will students and teachers do? How will
the project be introduced? How long will it take to complete? How will student learning be assessed? How will
the final product be used to inform/differentiate learning? How will you extend the student learning to a
higher learning level? How will you conclude the lesson? How will you provide feedback to students about
their work? MINIMUM 2 paragraph overview.

During math time, students will bring out their devices and go to the class blog. They will click on the
Flipped Classroom tab and listen to the podcast over money. The podcast will contain basic information over
the different forms of money and their value. The podcast will also give a couple examples of how to combine
money to make different amounts. After they’ve listened to the podcast, they will complete the activity below
that should be posted in our Google Classroom. The students will be required to post a combination of coins
to make 3 different amounts of money. Once everyone has completed the flipped classroom, the teacher will
pull up the class doc and look through the different ways students came up with to make the amounts.
To formatively assess the students based on the activity, the teacher will take notes on the various ways
students came up with and ask specific students how they came up with their answer during class discussion.
The teacher will also use this time to clear up any misconceptions or wrong answers to ensure every student
is understanding the content. Based on the results, the teacher can alter their lessons and activities for the
rest of the unit.
Importance of technology: Why is using a website-creation tool critical to the project? Could the project be

completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other types of technology, if
any, are going to be used in the learning experience?
I think using a blog gives students the opportunity to revisit content they may need more work with, and
practice with it more on their own. Having the teacher’s podcast and notes on the blog gives the student
good resources to use as they review the content. The project could’ve been completed without the blog, but
using the blog gives the students the opportunity to work independently and gives the teacher time to focus
on the information being posted on the class doc. Along with the blog, students will be using Google
Classroom to interact with their classmates and post their work for the class discussion.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Briefly discuss some possible issues surrounding Internet safety and
student privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience and explain how you would (1)
minimize risks to students/yourself; (2) alleviate any fears by parents/administrators, and (3) follow common
Internet Safety/Acceptable Use Policies.
I would make sure my blog/google doc is only available for the students in my class and their families. This
would ensure that no one would come in contact with the students or be able to access their work on the
blog (if student work is posted) or the doc. I would be sure to read up on the terms of use for each website
tool before allowing students to use it and send home the required documents for parental permission if
needed.

Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea, how do you feel the activities you created could impact
student learning? You may have designed this idea as an introductory activity to a unit of study. With that in
mind, what could be done to further extend the lesson? Are there other technology tools that could further
enhance this project?
I feel like this activity would allow students to take ownership of their learning and become more
independent when doing their work. After doing this lesson, students could begin to use other technology
tools to create their own project over money, Students could create their own blog/website tool about a form
of money and include a variety of ways to make that certain amount.
